To make the front look more comfortable, phone manufacturers have used a variety of screen configurations to accommodate the selfie lens. According to a recently published patent, Xiaomi is working on a “full-screen smartphone technology with three cameras”. Xiaomi applied to the USPTO(US Patent and Trademark Office) for a patent for “camera module, terminal device and image capture method” in 2019. The 28-page document was published on February 18, 2021, after which the patent was added to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Global Patent Protection Database.
According to the patent, it is a modern Xiaomi design with a large screen, ultra-narrow bezels and no front holes. The camera module on the back of the phone is horizontal and consists of three cameras and a flash. The rear camera can also be used for selfies. To make the camera’s rear camera work as a front camera, the phone has a built-in system that moves the camera up and then rotates it to allow users to take selfies. The design is somewhat similar to Asus Zenfone 6, but the actual principle of operation is different.

This design makes for better quality selfies and saves money. It’s unclear if and when Xiaomi will apply the patent to the final product, but it may not happen as under-screen camera technology matures and foldable phones develop.
