With an exclusive event in Shanghai, the same in which the new Mi Mix 2S was presented, Xiaomi also launched a new notebook. This is not an ultrabook, like the many in its catalog, but a real laptop for gaming, the first of the Chinese company. And in fact, his name is Xiaomi Mi Gaming Notebook.
From the aesthetic point of view, there are no important changes: Xiaomi Mi Gaming Notebook maintains the same design of Mi Notebook Pro already in circulation, with a nice brushed aluminum frame and premium finishes , but adds a high-level hardware configuration not only because it will be a laptop dedicated to gamers but also because it will have to deal with the “champions” of the category, offering valid technical specifications at a more accessible price. And we must admit that Xiaomi has hit the target.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Notebook is a bit thicker than the ultrabook (size 20.9 mm and weighs 2.7Kg ) and has a reinforced hinge, to support the large 15.6-inch IPS Full HD display (1920 x 1080 pixels, 300 nits) with 72% NTSC color gamut. On the other hand, the base houses a “professional” backlit RGB keyboard (16 million colors) with 4 zones, with a 30-key rollover, a 1.8 mm stroke and 5 configurable macro buttons. The audio compartment is instead entrusted to two 3W stereo speakers with support for Sony Hi-Res and Dolby Atmos technology, a choice (almost) forced considering the positioning of the notebook.
Moving on to the hardware platform, Xiaomi chose the best for this laptop: Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, with 16GB of DDR4 2.400 MHz RAM, 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD combined, as well as dedicated graphics Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of GDDR5 memory.
We would like to point out that in all models it will be possible to expand the RAM up to 32GB, as well as replace the classic 1TB disk with a second SSD drive. All SKUs have a 55Wh battery and a set of interfaces, which includes four USB 3.0 ports, two USB Type-C, HDMI, micro SD card reader and 3.5mm audio jack. The dual-band 802.11ac WiFi module, Bluetooth 4.1 and Gigabit Ethernet are unmissable. Onboard Windows 10 Home.
With similar configurations, and especially with the heat produced by high-end CPU + GPU, Xiaomi Mi Gaming Notebook will be able to effectively cool the internal components thanks to a combined system of 3 + 2 large diameter heat pipes and the “turbo cooling” technology that can be activated with a simple click during the most intense gaming sessions.
It is worth noting that one of the biggest promises of Xiaomi for its handset, however, is not only its hardware but also its price: the most powerful model of the Mi Gaming Laptop costs ¥ 8,999.00 (equivalent to $1432.64), while the most basic model costs ¥ 5,999.00 (about $955.04). For a gamer notebook of that level, the figures are quite attractive, we have to admit.
Unfortunately, it’s best not to have much hope of getting your hands on one of these. After all, according to the company’s announcement, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop arrives in the Chinese market on April 13 but has no plans to leave in other territories.
