The latest version of Xiaomi’s MIUI operating system is in progress. A brief look at the system from users reveals a special feature that Xiaomi is working on. According to reports from China, the upcoming version of MIUI comes with an “earthquake warning” feature.
This feature is not yet official and some improvements may still be needed. The earthquake warning will use a popup to send alerts to users. It will alert users when the network detects an imminent earthquake, which may cause a strong ground shake. It will also identify the location that will affect the seismic wave, the epicenter, and magnitude of the earthquake. After the countdown is completed, an emergency assistance service will be provided.
Seismic waves come in three forms, longitudinal waves, transverse waves, and surface waves. The propagation speed of longitudinal waves is fast, about 5.5 km – 7 km per second, but their destructive capacity is low. The destructive capacity of the transverse wave is great as it causes the ground to vibrate before and after the wave passes.
However, the propagation speed is slow (about 4 kilometers per second). A surface wave is the slowest and can only propagate along the surface of the ground. This is the main cause of severe damage to surface characteristics.
The principle of an earthquake warning system is to use the time difference from the fastest propagating waves to make predictions. As these waves come from deep below the surface and move very fast, the warning period is usually in seconds.
The faster longitudinal wave and the shorter transverse wave are related. As the ever-relatively harmless wave arrives first, the arrival time of the associated destructive transverse and surface waves can be quickly predicted.
The difference in arrival time between these waves is usually very small. Theoretical studies have shown that if the alert time is 3 seconds, the risk of death can be reduced by 14%. If it is 10 seconds, the risk of death is reduced by 39%, and if the warning time is 20 seconds, the risk of death can be reduced by 63%.
Of course, forecasting an earthquake is much more complicated than it seems. If Xiaomi develops such a feature, it will require more than laboratory studies to confirm its capability. However, since it does warn us a few seconds before, then accuracy could really be improved. This effort certainly looks ambitious.
Predicting the location of seismic waves, focus and magnitude is a very complicated process. However, if Xiaomi makes the start, other manufacturers may follow in the hope of further refinement.
In the recently updated MIUI beta, developers have found that Xiaomi is mulling support for reverse wireless charging. If all goes well, it is likely to be a big selling point for the upcoming Mi Mix 4. For the MIUI advertising problem that has been widely criticized, previously official has announced that it will be fully rectified and will cancel a large number of advertising spots.
Xiaomi Product Director, MIUI Experience General Manager @MIUI Xiaofan said that MIUI has done a lot of things for advertising in the past 2 months. The students who have developed the development version should have obvious perceptions, and the other big moves are behind.
