We had the chance to test for several days the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, here are our impressions in our comprehensive Review of the new borderless flagship Chinese manufacturer. The Smartphone has been the subject of a lot of ink in recent months, its designer Philippe Starck had fun tickling us shortly before its official presentation. It is now time to deliver our opinion, see what it is worth without waiting. The great strength of the Chinese manufacturer is its willingness to want to offer the best technology to the greatest number by breaking prices. While all competitors have the delusion of grandeur by offering rates that are less accessible in the high-end segment, Xiaomi is resisting. Besides, what is the Mi Mix 2 compared to a Galaxy S8 or LG V30 and Mi Mix? This is the question we will try to answer in this test by analyzing the smartphone in all its aspects. We start right away with the flagship!
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is presented quite different in comparison to its Mi MIX predecessor, especially in the field of design, specification, and price. For example, while Mi MIX is taller and wider, its Mi MiX 2 successor is smaller and narrower. It’s best to figure out the numbers. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is 151.8 millimeters high and 75.5 millimeters wide, while its Mi Mix predecessor in 2016 measures 158.8 millimeters in length or height and 81.9 millimeters in width. Feel the difference in dimensions, right? When we are at difference, we should note that the body and screen ratio is as high as 91.3%, and the width of the so-called “beard” of the device or, better said, the lower side of the frame around the screen is reduced by 12% compared to the Mi MIX predecessor. Check More review here. We can only say that the result was excellent. feel.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has been the closest to a device that one day may not even have the edges around the screen so that the company’s dedication to being at the very top of the technology innovation is completely fulfilled, and it is praiseworthy that these innovations are simultaneously available in a wide circle of users.
Video Review (Bonus)
What do you write about this class device? Simply put, this is the best smartphone company Xiaomi we had in our hands, and we had a lot of them. A brief and concise review would look like this: Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is a wonderful premium design, currently the strongest hardware specification, acceptable for what it offers, and is fast quality, powerful and one word deserves a great rating. However, we will go into details for you to describe your impressions more accurately and to help you decide to buy this smartphone or not.
Otherwise, We have a Basic version of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 with 64GB ROM Review Unit provided by GEARBEST and there are three models with the only difference in the amount of internal memory.

Unboxing
This Xiaomi’s premium device arrived in our editorial office in a chic black box looks very premium. It is immediately evident that we have a case with the flagship. that included a charger, a USB cable, a SIM tray opening needle, a USB Type-C port 3.5 mm audio adapter, a protective Cover, and a User Manual, besides the wonderfully designed device.
Someone will think that the case is superfluous, because the device looks very beautiful, why hide it in a cover? We answer. The case is made of ceramics, its frames are made of metal, so it turned out that the ceramics are very aggressive in collecting fingerprints, so the case can be very useful in use, and it will protect the smartphone from chips and cracks.
Design
The first impression we came up with in the introduction, and it comes down to one word – Wow! This is a beautifully designed smartphone that you do not have to get in your hand to be thrilled with it. Of course, the tastes are different, so perhaps not all “soaked” this modern so-called “bezel-less” design, but it is more than excellent. The less “Bezel” around the screen, the better.
We could say that Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is the right artwork in the world of smartphones. Let’s start from its front panel dominating the large 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen, stretching from the left, right, and top of the device. The only edge around the screen is visible from the bottom, and as we have already mentioned in the introduction and that part is 12% lower compared to the Mi MIX predecessor.
Compared to the predecessor, Mi MIX 2 offers some enhancements to the audio area that also influenced the design. Instead of the piezo-electric speaker that was a very interesting and innovative detail on last year’s model, Mi MIX 2 comes with a bit more common, but more powerful speaker technology. At the very top of the unit, there is a small and almost invisible slit hidden by the phone speaker and we can say it sounds much better than last year’s exotic alternative and Mi MIX 2 comes with a hidden proximity ultrasonic sensor.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is rounded on all four sides, with a beautiful rear ceramic panel that looks like a mirror and smoothly crosses the aluminum frame. Xiaomi is probably the first company to embed the ceramic back panel on their smartphones. Because of this rounded design and the slightly different, smaller dimensions of Mi MIX 2 lies much better in the hand than its predecessor, but this ceramic panel makes it pretty slippery. We tried to hold it with one hand while photographed, but it was so slippery that we dropped out of such exhibitions. This premium material has some interesting features like exceptional hardness which makes it virtually impossible to scratch, but its worse side is the fragility that will most likely in case of falling much easier to crack than for example Gorilla Glass Glass.
Because of this mask, Mi MIX 2 does not touch her hands, but she still hides the most beautiful part of her design and then that’s simply not it. On the upper side there is a “ring” of the camera featuring an 18-karat gold border, to the right of it there is a two-way LED flash, and below the camera has its place found a fingerprint sensor that reacts and works great. The letters “MIX DESIGNED BY XIAOMI” are printed in gold letters from the underside to the upper part. Everything looks nice, elegant and decent, and this is always helped by the ever-popular black body color.
There is also Mi MIX 2 Special Edition, which is currently unavailable for purchase and is characterized by something different design features. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Special Edition is still rounded to all four corners, but this time it is a ceramic unibody casing without an aluminum frame that comes in black with 18-karat gold-plated camera or in white with 18-karat pink- the gold border around the camera and the fingerprint sensor. The company states that it takes up to seven days to produce such a ceramic casing, and the whole process involves processing at 1,400 ° C and more than ten hours of diamond polishing. The resulting result is a beautiful, impeccable design that looks like a semi-rigid stone jade with its appearance.
Continue with the right Side where are the volume buttons and the power button. On the left side, we have the dual nano-SIM slot, while the USB Type-C is tucked on the lower edge of the Mi Mix 2. The smartphone does not have a jack, however, we have a supplied adapter that allows us to plug in a headset or headphones, at least that’s it.
To get back to the fingerprint sensor – this sensor is positioned in the optimal position and unlocked in at least 95% of cases and we were very happy with its speed and precision which is by itself the best in our range Xiaomi Mi Series of smartphones. Good light pressure on the sensor is good and Mi MIX 2 is virtually unlocked. Let’s also mention a part of this smartphone that did not really impress us, and these are visible fingerprints on a beautiful ceramic case. Of course, this is especially noticeable on black devices, like ours. But we must point out that fingerprints are less visible than in our previous Mi MIX model. Last year, Mi MIX was the first company with virtual keys, and it inherited the Mi MIX 2 model,
In the introduction, we mentioned part of the dimensions of this device and we have emphasized that it is considerably smaller compared to its Mi MIX predecessor, which in the beginning means it is easier to handle it despite the ceramic body. Thus, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is housed in a 151.8 x 75.5 x 7.7-millimeter case that weighs 185 grams, while Mi MIX 2 Special Edition comes with a smaller dimension of 150.5 x 74.6 x 7.7 millimeters, but with 187 gram weighs two grams of standard Mi MIX 2 model. Although smaller, this handset still requires a certain dose of gymnastics and handshake, especially for gentlemen.
Display
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 comes with a so-called Full-Screen screen, and we often hear a “bezel-less” design. The full-screen bezel-less display indicates a device with a screen extending up to three edges of the smartphone – top, left and right, while the lower side has a thicker frame around the screen.
The edges of this 5.99-inch screen are also curved and we must note that among other things this screen comes with today’s very popular 18: 9 aspect ratio, then with a density of 403ppi, a contrast of 1500: 1 and a DCI-P3 color range resulting in with high saturation of color. This screen comes with support for better visibility in the sun, then you can set the color temperature in warm, cold or standard settings in the settings, you can adjust the contrast and choose different color profiles, and you can set the font size from XS to XXL size. There is always a wake up double tap on the screen to turn it on and see what’s new, read more from igeekphone. and the passionate night readers will definitely enjoy the reading option which when turned on reduces the blue light that otherwise tends to read.
This IPS LCD screen boasts a FHD + resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels. What about picture quality and the overall quality of this screen? This is definitely the best screen we’ve ever had on a Xiaomi smartphone. It is no secret that Xiaomi will never compromise on the screen, and you will generally find it hard to see some worse screen on their devices. Of course, we do not mind that Xiaomi has put an FHD display on this flagship device instead of QHD resolution. Although it’s a nearly 6-inch screen, the image quality and sharpness are not lost, there is no image pixelation and the screen is comfortable to use.
All in all this screen is pleasantly surprised by the warm, comfortable and vibrant colors, and we will also mention that it responds very well to the touch. This is a device with a slightly larger screen, which is particularly inconvenient for handheld people, but Xiaomi has a solution. One of the most popular features of the MIUI operating system is to turn on the one-handed operating mode, which is usually triggered by a home-left or right-to-right switch with all the Xiaomi devices with the MIUI user interface, whereby the display shrinks to 4.5, 4, or 3.5 inches. By the way, we have not been able to find out whether this screen comes with some kind of scratch or puncture protection, so it would be good for users to purchase each case and some additional type of screen protection such as tempered glass.
Hardware & Performance
Like many flagships released this year, Xiaomi has made the decision to renew its confidence in Qualcomm with its SoC Snapdragon 835. The hardware side of this smartphone is nothing worse than its beautiful ceramic exterior, this is the device that really is the top of today’s offer. Below its beautiful and attractive exterior is the best and most powerful smartphone in the world today, primarily Qualcomm’s flagship processor – Snapdragon 835 (MSM8998). It is an eight-core processor that is made in a 10nm process and has four Kryo core at 2.45 GHz and four Kryo core at 1.9 GHz. Combined with this processor comes the powerful Adreno 540 graphics that works at 710 MHz. Definitely the top combination that guarantees smooth and fast work on the smartphone.
As far as working and internal memory is concerned, we have more models available. Let’s go in a row. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 (standard) comes with a 6 GB dual channel (1866 MHz) LPDDR4x operating memory, with internal memory being 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB of internal UFS 2.1 memory. On the other hand, there is the Mi MIX 2 Special Edition that has a huge 8 GB dual channel LPDDR4x (1866 MHz) and 128 GB of internal UFS 2.1 memory.
How much is the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 powerful smartphone can be clearly seen from every segment of its use? The speed of opening applications, their loading and multitasking are at the highest possible level. It is difficult for a user to take advantage of all the features of the hardware configuration provided by this premium smartphone. In addition, such a deadly combination of processors, graphics, workstations, and internal memory results in excellent user experience that is perhaps best seen in demanding 3D games. Of course, on this smartphone, we have not missed the chance to try some of the most demanding games, so we can say that Mi MIX 2 is without a problem and super smoothly spins Real Racing 3, War Robots and Asphalt 8 Airborne Games. Generally speaking, everything works flawlessly quickly and without pausing, one word is great.

Here are also some results obtained in a small series of benchmarks. As we can see, the Mi Mix 2 is very well classified under AnTuTu, it is not a big surprise in itself. The other benchmarks reveal very solid performances in all circumstances. Of course, benchmarks are not of vital interest to most people and do not reflect the user experience. These numbers will tell insiders who like to compare the performance of Mi Mix 2 with other flagships. And we can say that they are at the rendezvous as you can see in the table, above.
Xiaomi’s MIUI UI OS
Although we hoped that Mi MIX 2 would welcome us with a new stable version of the MIUI 9 user interface, this has not happened yet. Although it has been a long time since MIUI 9 was officially introduced to the public, it still can not be found in its stable version. Although MIUI 9 is not yet available in a stable version.
We hope to see MIUi 9 and this premium smartphone soon as the latest version of this user interface brings us a split-screen feature that can be very useful in large-screen devices while allowing two applications to be used simultaneously. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 came to us with the installed Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system and the MIUI 8.5 user interface. MIUI increasingly popular interface that looks like a very good combination of Android and iOS operating system. MIUI has no application tray, but all application icons are on the home screens, and one of the typical things in the Chinese version of this user interface that annoy users is synchronization problems and the lack of a Croatian menu. This synchronization problem can be solved completely or at least partially so that in the Security application under Permissions select the applications that will work in the background and you need permissions. Our MIX 2 did not have any problems with Gmail sync yet after these actions.
The Chinese variant of MIUI comes with a large number of bloatware applications, and some of them often get bored with various notifications in Chinese. Fortunately, Xiaomi has allowed a good deal of unwanted bloatware applications to be uninstalled, while for those that can not be uninstalled, there is a possibility of deactivating all notifications. Our test copy of the Mi MIX 2 smartphone came with the Google Play service, but here is the Chinese version of MIUI, once the device returns to the factory settings, Google services are lost. So far, there has been a very simple way to install these services through the company’s own App Store download service, but MIUI 8.5 upgrade things have changed. Instructions on how to install Google services at MIUI 8.5 can be found here.
If we ignore a couple of problems with the Chinese version of the MIUI user interface, then we can actually conclude that this interface on the Mi MIX 2 model works very fast. Everything works smoothly, without pausing, and without open background applications, there are approximately 3.5 GB of RAM available, which is more than enough for comfortable use.
We have the latest stable version of MIUI 8.5, the overlay house of the Chinese manufacturer. As is often the case in Asian ROMs, we can note the absence of an application drawer which forces us to put away the desktop by classifying applications in folders. The overlay is relatively impacting, it is far from the lightness of some manufacturers like Sony for example.
However, we must admit that it is still well thought especially on certain aspects of the function that clones the applications so that we can use two accounts Facebook, Twitter or any other type of social applications or office. Nevertheless, on other aspects, MIUI can be quite confusing placing some options that we are used to finding in some places within a different menu. Let’s hope that with MIUI 9 this is not the case and the builder does a bit of housework at this level.
Google PlayStore No PreInstalled
The smartphone comes from China and there the Play Store is not Installed, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is recent and the international/global ROM is not yet available. So when we turn on this one for the first time, we are faced with this problem. It will use the flagship with the English language and install the Play Store. It is not a very complex action to achieve, fortunately for us. However, it is sad to have to go through it. When the international ROM is available, it will be possible to flash it to get the Any language of course.
Camera
We can not write that we are disappointed with the cameras because the real-life photographs are not bad at all, but we see that perhaps in this area, Xiaomi could pick up a ladder because of its smartphone-based photo capabilities with a price ranging from $300 to $400. Mi MIX 2 on the back has a built-in Sony IMX386 12 MP sensor. Sounds familiar? And it should be because this camera sensor is found in almost all of the latest Xiaomi smartphones Mi Series. So this camera sensor can be seen at Mi 6 flagship, followed by Mi Max 2 phablets, Mi 5X models, and the latest Mi A1 smartphone.
This 12 MP camera sensor comes with an optical four-axis image stabilization that reduces the impact of shaking hands or movements while taking pictures, so video clips and captured photos largely retained their sharpness. There is also a 1.25μm pixel, phase autofocus and aperture f / 2.0. Next to the camera is a two-way LED flash, and as far as the camera application is concerned, it is the same as any other Xiaomi smartphone, and its use is very simple. This application offers support for many different shooting options such as HDR Recording Mode, HHT (Hand Held Twilight), Beautification, Face Detection, Panoramic Mode, and Night Mode, various filters, white balance settings, HHT (Hand Held Twilight) is a kind of HDR where the camera shoots six images and then combines them to get the best possible photo in the worst conditions (raising ISO sensitivity, higher shutter speed). We have tried this option, but we did not really see any excessive difference.
Until now, they have not been able to invent the camera that would capture the ideal nightmares, so this area where many manufacturers are trying to achieve some improvements. Some people go better, some are worse, but ultimately taking photos under bad lighting conditions causes many manufacturers to have headaches. We will mention that not even to us users are no different. Sometimes we record some beautiful night scene, look at the gallery and see that the photo does not show almost anything of the real impression. Losses of detail and among other images created in such darker conditions have a lot of noise, are not sharp, they lose color, and the camera struggles with the focus of the object, so focusing takes longer. The end result is a photo that only partially transmits the desired atmosphere. The exception is not the camera of this elite smartphone.
The small 5 MP front selfie camera thanks to a super-black lens coating completely absorbs this black design so it is barely noticeable. With the 5 MP sensor, this camera offers support for 36 features within the Beauty Mode 3.0 feature, a self-timer that counts seconds to set up for shooting, there is also a face recognition feature and the option to recognize the age and gender of the photographers. Let’s also mention how this camera allows real-time video calling at 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second. The obtained photos are of solid quality, of course, always better when they are shot in the conditions of better lighting, and we certainly have to note that pre-adjusted settings make our face look more beautiful thanks to the “peg” of certain imperfections such as wrinkles or pimples. What is definitely nonsensical in this smartphone is the selfie camera position. It is located at the lower right corner, which many will consider being very unlucky, especially the deceased. Namely, every time you want a selfie photo shoot you have to turn the smartphone so that your camera is on the top or else you will cover your entire camera with your palm. Additionally, the fact that in a normally positioned smartphone where the selfie camera on the underside is virtually impossible to get a normal photo. By this, we mean that the camera does not cover too large an angle of shooting and will generally capture a part of your face or possibly your entire face and a little bit of background depending on how long your hands are. If you want more than your head in the frame then you will have to stretch your arms, and the whole selfie of the picture then looks a bit odd. When Mi MIX 2 turns to the opposite side, and the selfie camera is up, then selfie photos are normal.
Rear camera Mi MIX 2 smartphones can record video content at 4K, 1080p, and 720p at 30fps, and there is also the option of shooting video content in slow-motion effect at 720p at 120fps. Basically standard as with other company smartphones. The only objection we can make when recording a video is that when shooting a Slow-motion camera, there are few focusing problems. We will conclude that Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is primarily a make-up, elite smartphone whose main selling adult design is, so other features remain crunchy in the background; some more, some less, and cameras are definitely on the line and with double-favored Xiaomi smartphones.
Audio and video
At the very top of the device, there is a small, almost invisible slit hidden by the speaker of the phone. This speaker except for calls is also used to get stereo sound combined with the loudspeaker located on the underside of the device next to the USB Type-C port. Stereo sound, therefore, provides the lower speaker for deep tones and the upper speaker in charge of multiple tones. The sound obtained is very rich and high quality with very high and low tones and dynamics – simply said the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 offers a premium audio experience.
With the Mi 6 model, Xiaomi joined the new trends in the smartphone industry that was first launched by LeEco, a CDLA (Continual Digital Lossless Audio) standard. The trend continues on the Mi MIX 2 model, and the CDLA standard means that this device comes with no 3.5 mm audio output, and the USB Type-C port is for audio signal transmission. Unfortunately, with this device, we did not get any matching headphones that support this standard but are purchased separately. If you want to use the headphones with a standard connector, that’s not a problem, because it comes with a USB Type-C port in a 3.5 mm audio adapter.
For Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 there is still no global version of the MIUI user interface so we had fun with the Chinese version of this interface. This 8.5 stable version of the Chinese MIUI along with the bloatware application provided by the company’s music and video services. Of course, we are always more interesting about the company’s music service, which besides playing the music we have stored in the device memory, also serves free and unlimited streaming music of all kinds, which means that besides the Chinese hits you will laugh well you can also listen to the latest Western hits currently playing the world’s top charts. We must only emphasize that downloading such music content can be very slow. The interface of this application has been almost completely translated into English so you will not have trouble finding.
Connectivity
We MIX 2 is the first Xiaomi to be a global smartphone that comes with support for up to 43 mobile networks, the most so far this company has ever had on any of its devices. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 comes with a slot for two NanoSIM cards, and with support for 4G LTE networks and Dual Standby support, Mi MIX 2 comes with VoLTE (Voice over LTE) voice calling standard via 4G / 4G + network that guarantees better sound quality when dialing. As for the reception of the 4G signal and volume and sound quality in Zagreb and its surroundings, there was no problem. Those who like to control home appliances with their smartphone will probably not be happy to read that Mi MIX 2 does not come with an infrared port.
With regard to positioning, the reviewed Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 already has standard support for GPS, AGPS, GLONASS, and Beidou. We tried navigation through the Google Maps app and everything worked without any problems. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 provides connectivity options with the following support:
- 4G FDD-LTE B1 / B2 / B3 / B4 / B5 / B7 / B8 / B12 / B13 / B17 / B18 / B19 / B20 / B25 / B26 / B27 / B28 / B29 / B30; TDD-LTE B34 / B38 / B39 / B40 / B41
- 3G WCDMA B1 / B2 / B3 / B4 / B5 / B6 / B8 / B9 / B19, TD-SCDMA B34 / B39; 3G CDMA EVDO, BC0, BC1, BC6, BC10-2G
- GSM B2 / B3 / B5 / B8; 2GCDMA BC0, BC1, BC6, BC10
- GPS: High-precision GPS positioning, AGPS, GLONASS, Beidou
- Bluetooth: v5.0
- WiFi: 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, WiFi Direct, WiFi Display
- NFC
Battery
One of the best sides of this elite smartphone is definitely an irreplaceable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3,400 mAh and a 9V / 2A charger with Quick charge 3.0 support. This battery is recharged via the USB Type-C port and has been able to provide the entire day of autonomy despite the rather intense energy consumption. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has a large screen that occupies most of the front panel, but the FHD resolution is the optimum solution, as it always requires less energy than the QHD screen.
Looking at the global battery consumption, this is an energy-hungry smartphone that will cost you more energy than a smartphone that works for a more energy-saving Snapdragon 625 processor. While the Xiaomi Mi A1 spent half an hour watching YouTube consuming about 5% of the battery, Mi MIX 2 had “eaten” up to 10% of the battery for this same action. When playing games, and those demanding graphics, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 will spend about half an hour of playing around 10% of the battery.
Throughout the day, the intuitive use of Mi MIX 2 smartphone that includes synchronizing emails, social networks, surfing, playing and playing games at the end of the day would remain about 30 to 40% of the battery.
- The speed at which the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is charged with its charger (9V / 2A) is as follows:
20% = 12 minutes
50% = 32 minutes
80% = 52 minutes
100% = 1 hour and 27 minutes
Conclusion
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is an elite smartphone that offers a combination of cutting-edge performance, incredible bezel-less design and true premium feel in every way. In addition to some of the slight objections that apply to the Chinese version of the MIUI user interface, the average camera and slip in the hands of this device have nothing to complain about. We were really pleased with this smartphone in the world.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is a flagship worthy of the name with good numbers of qualities to start with its really incredible borderless screen. 4G compatibility with our frequency bands including the famous 700 and 800 MHz, strong performance based on Qualcomm’s high-end SoC, Snapdragon 835 and an interesting range. However, this camera is not as enticing as the rest of the datasheet, however, it is not catastrophic either. We advise the less informed to wait for an international/global ROM is available with this good old Play Store.
