Xiaomi may be betting on a technology recently launched alongside HTC U11 and Google Pixel 2, which has not yet excited many people. This is called Edge Sense, or Active Edge, which in Brazil was known as “tight edges.”
The feature, which debuted on the HTC U11, is the placement of sensors that identify varying pressure levels applied on the sides of the device. From this identification, a series of functions are enabled or disabled.
The rumor began with the discovery of a curious user who eventually bumped into a hidden menu on the MIUI 8.2.2 system, custom version of the Chinese brand’s Android, in its Xiaomi Mi 5. The menu, called “Border controls”, allows various functions by “tightening” the sides of the device, such as returning to a point, or taking pictures. As we know, no Xiaomi handset still counts this feature, which points to a future release with embedded functionality.
The next cell phone in the Chinese giant’s plans for release appears to be the Redmi 5 Plus, which according to leaks will be another cell phone with minimal edges. However, no other rumor has pointed out that this smartphone would receive the Edge Sense. So it may be that Xiaomi is still refining the hardware of its future smartphones so they get the news.
