The Xiaomi has patented two new designs foldable smartphones in China. The patents have been registered with CNIPA (National Intellectual Property Management of China) and they are both interesting as they are different from what we have seen so far.
The first design shows a phone reminiscent of the Huawei Mate X. The device folds horizontally and outwards. When folded the camera is on the back and is vertically aligned. The camera has a whole vertical strip to the left, as you can see.
This part of the device is separated from the screen and is the thickest bezel of the phone. When the device is unfolded, the camera – which has two sensors – looks forward and is to the right of the large screen. In the upper and lower part of the phone, there are extremely thin bezels.
The second patent shows a vertically foldable cellphone. This device does not resemble the Motorola RAZR as it folds out rather than inward. When it is closed it has very thin bezels on three sides, bottom, left and right. At the back, the vast majority of the panel is screen-covered.
At the bottom, there is a thicker bezel. Inside the screen, at the back, we find the dual camera unit. Although it looks impressive we find this design not at all convenient as a huge elongated handset when opened.
The first plan is likely to become a reality. The 2nd we don’t see getting into production – the diploma probably came in to have the design as a file. Xiaomi had demonstrated a foldable handset. The design was weird, the sides of the phone when folded open were folding back. Eventually, the design became fixed with a huge screen and announced as Mi MIX Alpha. The company can talk about an upcoming foldable mobile at MWC 2020.
