Huami, as you know is cooperating with Xiaomi in order to make Mi Band 5 and many other gadgets for the company. They recently signed a 3 year contract that they will continue doing this thing and in the future! But Huami is making at the same time and it’s own gadgets, through Amazfit. Their latest creation is the Amazfit Band 5, a Mi Band 5 which supports and SpO2 and Alexa! I was one of the first to buy it from their European warehouse for 52.58€ (!!!) and is time to show it and to you!
First of all, the Amazfit Band 5 appeared at their US warehouse and after some time it appeared at their European warehouse. Despite the fact that they send it in almost all European countries for free, for Greece, a European country, had to pay extra 7.68€ as postal fees! As if Greece is not part of Europe…. So in the end I paid about 62$, about 3 times up from a Xiaomi Mi Band 5!!! I will have you link at the end from their Aliexpress store, that is much cheaper if you want to get it.
The Amazfit Band 5 came to me from France, with a French post service, without any customs to pay of course. The box that came to me is a white, as you can see, comparing to the know black that the Mi Band 5 has. On the front side you can see a picture of the Amazfit Band 5 with some info and at the back also you can see some info. If you see the image below, you will see how similar is the Amazfit Band 5 with the Mi Band 5. Also. the boxes of the two versions of Mi Band 5 that I have, a global and a CN, have a major difference with the box of Amazfit Band 5! Just check the pointed marks and you will understand!
The Amazfit Band 5 is the outer look about 95% the same with the Mi Band 5, something expected I guess! The Amazfit Band 5 is thinner for about 0.1mm, lighter for 1gr and the only visible difference, if you have a good look at it, is the that Mi Band 5 has a circle button, when Amazfit Band 5 has an elliptic. You will tell me….big deal and I will agree to that.
As functions, Amazfit Band 5 has the same with Xiaomi Mi Band 5. When I first received it, it came to me with the firmware 1.0.0.7. The firmware supported some European languages, Arabic, Turkish, Chinese and NOT Greek of course. Now I’m at 1.0.1.26, with some more languages, still NO Greek.
The Amazfit Band 5 connect ONLY with the Zepp app and not with Mi Fit, something normal I guess, since (Xiao)Mi Fit is only for smartbands from Xiaomi, not Huami.. So if you buy it, don’t try to connect it to Mi Fit, connect it better to the modded version of Zepp (ex Amazfit) app, found here. Of course you can connect your Amazfit Band 5 with the Notify and Fitness for Amazfit, not for Band, if you use this app.
The Amazfit Band 5 has the exactly same features with Mi Band 5 plus supporting SpO2 (blood saturation) and Alexa. So the million dollar question is ….
Must I buy it for only these two features?
First of all let us see if the Amazfit Band 5 really supports Alexa and if the measurements of the saturation, are reliable or not. Let us start with Alexa…..
According with the official data, Alexa is not supported in Greece, but in several other countries. So, if you check my video review, at my Xiaomi Mi 10, there is an option at the ROM I have from xiaomi.eu, to change country and language. As you see I did it and Alexa was working normally at my mobile, giving commands that where done without problem. Normally, going to Zepp app, I should see an option to add Alexa at the option accounts, as is shown below…
…but there was no option as you can see and in my video review! So I cannot use an feature that I paid! Time now to see the second feature that I paid…saturation.
This feature was expected to come with the Mi Band 5, but of course Huami never showed it in order to present it at their gadget only. To remind here that this feature we can see it in honor Band 5 from last year and in a couple of clones of Huami band. Of course not all are working well, but the Honor Band 5 from what I remember was working perfectly. So will saturation measurement of Amazfit Band 5 are reliable to use? Unfortunately the news are not good. I have checked it several times and in my Greek reviews and in the English and there was a big difference between my oxylometer and the Amazfit Band 5. As a internist, the use of an oxylometer is essential in my job, so I always carry it around. So comparing the measurements of saturation in my Amazfit Band 5 and my oxylometer, was the only real thing to do. The difference might not be big, still for the money I gave should get identical values, that I did not. I don’t know if this can be corrected with future updates at the firmware, but lets hope it! So two out of two where not working either at all or not correctly as they should. Not a good thing!
Apart from these, the menu is exactly the same with the Xiaomi Mi Band 5. Also it supports the same notifications that Mi Band 5 does. So if you know that Mi Band 5 supports your language, Amazfit Band 5 will also support it. Check the rest of the data:
