This 2018 sees much excitement in the Asian smartphone scene. And it is not surprising that behind the Vivo NEX there is so much hype, given that it is the heir to the Vivo APEX concept seen at MWC 2018. Finally, after days and days of rumors, the smartphone was officially presented. Here’s everything you need to know about the technical data, price, and availability.
For those who do not know it, the main peculiarity of the Vivo NEX is represented by its form factor and the technologies that derive from it. The glass shell offers on the front a large UltraView full-screen display of 6.59 inches diagonal with Full HD resolution + (2316 x 1080 pixels) in 19.3: 9 and 387 PPI density.
Even if such a large diagonal can “scare” users, the size is favored thanks to the high screen-to-body ratio around 91.24 %. In place of the capsule, therefore, the feature called Screen Sound casting Technology was introduced. As shown, this would allow the propagation of sound through the front glass, even if we await more information about it.
Both the proximity and brightness sensor, on the other hand, is hidden below the display. The panel has Super AMOLED technology and, after Vivo X21 UD, offers the implementation of an ID sensor in the third generation display. This offers a + 50% accuracy and + 10% speed in unlocking. This sensor is only available on the Ultimate version, while on the standard variant a more traditional rear sensor has been fitted.
The Vivo NEX hardware compartment is composed of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 710, the same seen on Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. Built at 10 nm, the SoC includes a Kryo 360 hexa-core CPU up to 2.2 GHz, Adreno 616 GPU, 6GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X-1866 RAM and 128 B of internal memory.
The Vivo NEX Ultimate, being the top model, enjoys the presence of the powerful Snapdragon 845. The 10nm chipset includes an octa-core CPU Kryo 385 up to 2.8 GHz and a GPU Adreno 630, 8GB of LPDDR4X-1833 dual channel RAM and 128GB/ 256GB of internal memory.
Given the excitement in mobile gaming, Vivo NEX also includes support for players. As the ad hoc arrangement of the antennas not to compromise reception, dissipation systems, and the Virtual Surround Sound with DTS X support, with a lot of collaboration with the Unreal Engine developers.
About audio, as per the company’s tradition, there is a HiFi system. In the case of the Vivo NEX, an AK4376A chip is integrated, while for the Ultimate edition a combination between CS43199 and SSM6322.
Given the dimensions of 162 x 77 x 7.98 mm, inside the phone we find a generous 4000mAh battery. Connectivity side is the dual SIM 4G support, as well as Wi-Fi ac Dual Band, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS. The software that manages everything is based on Android 8.1 Oreo with the renewed Funtouch OS 4 custom interface with Energy UI.
To enrich the Vivo NEX functionality with AI, Jovi, the renewed voice assistant can also be recalled via a dedicated button. Among the various functions available we find the menu management and the fast execution of complex commands, the recognition of images and text, with reference to any purchase links, translations, monetary exchange and so on, as well as supporting some apps of 3rd parts.
The back has no particular aesthetic novelty compared to the aforementioned X21 UD. Here we find the dual 12MP + 5MP camera with aperture f / 1.8-2.4. The main sensor is a Sony IMX363 with focal aperture f / 1.8, dimensions of 1 / 2.55 “, 1.4 μm pixels, sapphire protection lens and OIS stabilization. As seen with Jovi, even here there is no shortage of software features, including scene recognition and AI filters.
The 8MP front camera with f / 2.0 aperture is another unique feature of the Vivo NEX. It is a retractable selfie camera, hidden inside the shell. When you select the front sensor in the Camera app this will automatically pop up from the top frame.
