The earlier analysis of 5G networks performance in the United States by RootMetrics, which is a subsidiary of IHS Markit, found that there is still much space for improvement in the performance of 4G networks and pointed out that in some places 4G data rates even exceeded 5G.
This study, conducted in the second half of 2019, highlights the differences in 5G network coverage and speeds among major operators. Taking the service in Los Angeles as an example, the maximum download rate is significantly different from 125.7Mbps of T-Mobile in the United States to 627Mbps of Verizon.
RootMetrics points out that the 4G data rate of Verizon exceeds the city’s T-Mobile 5G network average and is almost the same as the 5G service of AT&T. However, in terms of 5G coverage, T-Mobile tops the list, accounting for nearly 39% of Los Angeles. By comparison, Sprint is 36.4%, AT&T is 6.7%, and Verizon is less than 1%. The highest 5G speed of Sprint in the city is 201.1Mbps.
RootMetrics points out that the research results reflect the use of different 5G frequency bands by operators: Although Verizon’s preferred millimeter wave has faster network speeds, the sub-6GHz spectrum adopted by its competitors can spread farther to provide greater coverage range.
Although the initial results were “somewhat mixed,” RootMetrics predicts that data rates and coverage will increase over time, consistent with “technical upgrades.”
