Igeekphone news on November 27, some netizens found the controller model “Roy” of Valve’s mysterious VR headset Deckard in the SteamVR driver file, revealing its design and input method.
Earlier this year, XR enthusiast Brad Lynch had already discovered code for the “Roy” controller, which would be equipped with shoulder keys and a D-pad so that it could be used as a controller for flat-screen games.
Now Lynch has discovered a 3D model of Roy, further confirming the existence of shoulder keys, D-pad, thumb rocker, buttons, index finger trigger, grip trigger, and system buttons. The model also shows a loopless design, but Lynch also found early versions with a ring design similar to the original Oculus Quest controller. These early designs appear to have first appeared in a patent filed by Valve in 2022.
Igeekphone notes that the design of the “Roy” controller and a 2022 job Posting from Valve strongly suggest that the Deckard headset will use a computer vision positioning system from an onboard camera, reducing costs and eliminating the need for a base station. The addition of shoulder keys and D-pad also suggests that the headset will focus on playing flat Steam games on a virtual screen. In November, Valve strongly hinted that the headset would focus on wireless streaming of Steam content on PCS.
