As the headline states, the new model from UMIDIGI (former UMI) in the past month launched a new device that follows the new trend in phone’s form factor. Many flagship got in to it; Samsung S8, LG G6, Huawei P10, HTC, even the new Pixel from Google. Ok, we have clear that this trend came to stay for a while so UMI came up with its UMIDIGI S2 a cellphone with 18:9 aspect ratio body.
Desing
Umidigi achieved something that you will start to hear once you have the S2, “Hey, which phone is that?!”, specially the red one. Here in iGeekphone when we started to talk about this handset more than one fall in love the mentioned before, look at it:This phone share the same process of manufacturing has the mainstream brands, even the same materials. Made from aluminum, using CNC cutting technique to sculpt the Umidigi S2 from a single piece of metal to achieve this unibody finish. Its 18:9 form factor couldn’t been reached with out a display that comes with a single piece, a bond with zero space between the screen and the touch panel, giving its 90% Screen-to-Body ratio.
Also the array of cameras on the back plus finger print scanner has a sense of symmetry, one of design foundations.
In your unboxing you will find the handset, protectiton cover, manual, power adapter, one data cable and its adapter,
Hardware
We have in front beauty with brains, the UMIDIGI S2 is moved by a Helio P20 from MediaTek, an eight-core processor at 2.3GHz which also features a dual-core 900MHz Mali T880 MP2 GPU. To complete the inner brain of the terminal, 4Gb of RAM with 64Gb of internal storage. And a microSD slot that will allow us to add extra 256GB.
The dual camera is present in this new phone from Umidigi. We found a sensor of 13mpx accompanied by another of 5mpx, both designed to produce photographs with selective blur and 3D photographs thanks to the combination of both images captured at different angles. The cameras, both with Sony sensor, are accompanied by a Dual LED flash and have PDAF focus in addition to being able to capture 4K video. In the front facing camera there’s a 5mpx camera with beauty mode for perfect selfies. But undoubtedly the best feature of this Umidigi S2 is its battery. Neither its USB C port nor the ability to connect to dual WiFi networks, nor even have a dual SIM tray or a fingerprint reader in the back. The best is its 5,100 mAh battery which, according to the manufacturer, will keep the phone running for two days without much trouble. The Umidigi S2 also comes with a metallic body and with Android 7.1.1 Nougat inside, masked, as usual, behind the proprietary layer of the manufacturer: UMI GUI OS.
ReviewMade with the effort from a high end phone with the price of a medium range cellphone, also having a hardware from big brands. The Umidigi S2 arrived as underdog but came to take a good share from the market, with a beauty design and a great mixture of hardware.
The cameras and the battery life assure a new horde of fans… even we can think this is more like a high-end device more than a mid-range, but time will tell when the S2 face the real world.
