The Illinois House of Representatives has passed a bill that would prohibit e-cigarette companies from advertising, marketing or promoting e-cigarettes because it could mislead parents, teachers or others into thinking the devices are common items.
Democrats and Republicans alike often hear teachers complain about students bringing e-cigarettes like highlighters, erasers and even toys into school.
Democratic Senator Julie Morrison said: “I’ve had young people tell me they started experimenting with these devices because they saw their friends have them at parties and they thought it was fun and everyone was using them.” But it does create an addiction, and that’s what we’re trying to stop.”
Enforcement of the legislation will be handled by the Illinois Department of Taxation, the Secretary of State and local law enforcement. Bill 2662, introduced by the Senate, passed the House unanimously and was returned to the Senate for another consideration due to a technical correction.
