AI or Artificial intelligence is developed to make a machine display human-like abilities such as learning, creativity, reasoning, planning, etc. In this world of internet and technology, AI is one of the most important sectors that the technological field has been focusing on.
In our daily lives, AI is used in online shopping and advertising, web search, Digital Personal Assistance, cars, machine translations, cybersecurity, and many more. Now, AI can even judge your face!
AI’s might not be at the point where they will actually judge your face, but they have been used a lot more frequently in day to day lives. Canadian players looking for the best Interac casino sites might encounter AI when enjoying the latest live casino games, thanks to recent advancements in online gambling technology.
Who Created This Technology?
Researchers at Stevens Institute of Technology collaborated with the University of Chicago and Princeton University to teach an AI algorithm to model these first impressions and accurately predict how people will perceive them based on their photos. In proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ April issue, this paper is published.
Jordan W. Suchow, a cognitive scientist and AI expert at the School of Business at Stevens, along with his team including Thomas Griffiths and Joshua Peterson at Princeton, and Stefan Uddenberg and Alex Todorov at Chicago Booth, asked thousands of people to give their first impressions of 1,000 face-photos generated by computer ranked using criterias such as how much trustworthy, religious, intelligent, electable or outgoing the person can be. These responses were used to train a neural network to follow similar judgments about people using the photo of the face only.
Why Is It Created?
There are certain prejudices a person has in mind while encountering someone new. These are normally based on common intuitions or cultural assumptions such as people with glasses are intelligent, or people who smile are trustworthy. The algorithm assesses your photos but it does not tell you why it has assessed them like that or any other targeted feedback.
This program was originally developed to help psychological researchers generate images of faces to use in experiments on social cognition and perception, but it can also help in other causes as well. People care about how others perceive them, so they put great effort into looking good in whatever photos they post. Suppose, you get a series of photos of your face scanned and choose the best one that the AI selects, it might help with the image that you are trying to present of yourself.
This might not sound very useful, but if that person is a political leader or an influencer, it might be of big help to them if they can show themselves as a very trustworthy person and their opponent as suspicious just by choosing the AI-approved photograph.
Security Measures
Technology has its good and bad uses. If a photograph can be judged, then based on that, a simple modification to the image can make a person look like something they are not. Since it can be used for negative purposes as well, the team has already secured a patent. Now they are creating a start-up to license the algorithm for pre-approved ethical purposes. According to Mr. Suchow, they are taking all the steps to ensure that the system will not be used to do any harm.
Wrapping Up
With this innovation, AI technology is taking another leap towards the future. The dream of the developers to make robots or systems to do human work does not seem like a far future. According to Mr. Suchow, they are developing another algorithm to predict how an individual will respond to another person’s face. It gives up hope to see more wonders made possible by AI in the future.
