A report on smoking habits in Denmark prepared by the Danish National Institute of Public Health for the Danish Health Authority shows that about 136,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 29 used e-cigarettes between 2022 and 2024, with the proportion of e-cigarette use rising from 7% to 12%. 82% used fruit-flavored e-cigarettes.
Health Minister Sophie Løhde expressed concern, but also noted that the government has begun to take measures to combat the problem. For example, since 2022, only tobacco and menthol flavored e-cigarettes have been legally sold, and other flavored e-cigarettes have been banned. However, the data shows that the number of young people using fruit-flavored e-cigarettes grew by nearly 46,000 between 2022 and 2024.
In response, Denmark has launched a new prevention program. Sophie Løhde acknowledges that some of the precautions have only just taken effect and are therefore not yet reflected in the latest study data. That may mean the government needs to do more to reverse the trend, she added.
According to the data, as of December 2023, the total population of Denmark is about 5.95 million. In 2022, Denmark will ban fruit-flavored e-cigarettes; In July 2024, single-use e-cigarettes were also banned.
