TCL unveiled its smart glasses TCL NxtWear Air at the 2022 CES, independently developed by Thunderbird Innovation, an AR startup jointly incubated by TCL Electronics and TCL Industry.
TCL NxtWear Air, an updated version of last year’s NxtWear G smart glasses, is 30% lighter, from 130g to 75g. TCL has also made some changes for style-conscious people, tweaking the design to look more like a regular pair of sunglasses.
The NxtWear Air, like the NxtWear G, has two 1080p MicroOLED displays embedded in the frame of a pair of glasses, using polarized BirdBath optics to give the effect of looking at a 140-inch screen about four meters away. The lenses are opaque, and the glasses don’t offer AR or VR capabilities. Instead, it works like a secondary display you wear on your face, using USB-C to connect to a DisplayPort-compatible phone, tablet or laptop. The glasses can be used in scenes such as watching movies, playing games and working, supporting 2D and 3D effects.
The NxtWear Air has built-in stereo speakers and can be connected to Bluetooth or wired headphones. This year’s model also comes with two magnetic exchange plates that attach to the front of the frame to change the style of the glasses.

Igeekphone has learned that TCL NxtWear Air will launch globally in the first quarter of 2022, and it will be sold in China under the Thunderbird brand. There’s no word yet on where they’ll be available, and TCL hasn’t said how much they’ll cost. By comparison, the NxtWear G went on sale in Australia last year in limited quantities for about rmb4,331.
