At the beginning of the year, at the MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Qualcomm ‘s presentation of the new Snapdragon 700 platform was held. As can be guessed from the numbering, this is the new declination of chipsets for the medium / high range of the sector. And after the debut of the Snapdragon 710, on board the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Vivo NEX A, new rumors unveil details on the upcoming Snapdragon 720, an unprecedented SoC that should integrate the first NPU of the US company.
According to the rumors in question, the Snapdragon 720 should represent a new significant step for the company. Unlike the Kirin 970 and, in theory, the upcoming Kirin 670, Qualcomm’s SoCs have so far managed machine learning through the GPU, with good results but lower than Huawei’s solutions. And the introduction of the NPU would go precisely in this direction, focusing more on the factor related to artificial intelligence and all that goes with it.
Among other things, these leaks bring us interesting news also regarding the equally future Snapdragon 730. In the table above you can see the technical features compared with those of the Snapdragon 710. The unprecedented chipset would be characterized by a production process at 8 nm, so far never seen in the mobile landscape. In addition, the architecture would also switch to the next Kryo 4xx, with an octa-core CPU up to 2.3 GHz.
The graphics part would, however, be managed by the current Adreno 615, as we do not notice any differences regarding the support to RAM and internal storage. Instead, the image processor changes, with the Spectra 350 managing the imaging compartment. And even in this case, we notice the wording on the NPU 120, although it is not known whether it will be the same as the SD 710 or if it will be an evolution.
