Samsung Electronics today (September 4) released its first integrated 5G baseband mobile SoC chip Exynos 980, which is an AP (application processor) and BP (baseband processor) packaged in a single chip. Compared with the plug-in baseband scheme commonly used in current 5G mobile phones, higher integration can not only reduce power consumption and heat but also reduce the encroachment of internal component space of mobile phones.
In terms of specifications, the Exynos 980 is based on an 8nm process and features an 8-core CPU design with two Cortex A77 cores (2.2GHz) and six Cortex A55 cores (1.8GHz). The GPU is the Mali G76 MP5. In terms of communication performance, Samsung introduced that the Exynos 980 can reach 2.55Gbps in the 5G network in the Sub 6GHz band, up to 1Gbps in 4G, and 3.55Gbps in dual mode.

According to official data, the Exynos 980 also integrates an ISP supporting 100 million pixels (ISOCELL Bright HMX) and an NPU with 2.7 times performance for artificial intelligence computing, content filtering, privacy protection, and mixed reality.
On the peripheral side, Exynos 980 supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, 4K 120FPS codec, 3360×1440 resolution screen, UFS 2.1 flash memory, LPDDR4X memory and more. The Exynos 980 has begun sampling to customers and will start mass production by the end of this year.
Previously, MediaTek also announced the start of its first SoC with integrated 5G baseband, 7nm process, the CPU core is also the Cortex A77, but the GPU is the more powerful Mali G77, the 5G downlink speed is also 4.7Gbps, but it Needs to wait until next year Q1 mass production.
