Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 2 as the next generation of its original folding phone. Although the official price is not yet known, it must be around $2000 just like the original model. This means that Samsung’s flagship line with a folding screen is not yet available to most. With this in mind, the company has been working on a cheaper version. Now the alleged Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Lite would have been certified.
A Samsung device with the model number SM-F415F / DS was recently certified by the WiFi Alliance. Although the exact model is unknown, the model number suggests that it is a phone from the Galaxy Fold family. For reference, the first-generation Galaxy Fold has the model number F900, while the Galaxy Z Flip has the model number F700.
The newly certified SM-F415F / DS is believed to be an affordable version of the Fold, as the model number places it in the F400 series. The phone may come under the name of Galaxy Fold Lite or Galaxy Z Fold Lite. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a Galaxy Fold phone for a more affordable price segment. In fact, the terminal would have come out this year, but a restructuring in the company’s launches would have delayed it until the next year 2021.
The ‘1’ in the model number is said to denote a second-generation model, referencing the Galaxy Z Fold 2 which has the model number F91, while the new Z Flip 5G comes with the model number F70x. That means this is not a rebranded first-gen product. However, the WiFi Alliance certification shows that the device will not be compatible with WiFi 6. That may be because the Galaxy Fold ‘lite’ will likely include a lower-end chipset.
The terminal would be more affordable in relation to the price of the original Galaxy Fold, but it will still have a high price. While the main Fold terminals have been around $2000 as a starting price, the new Z Fold Lite would be around $1000 according to what has been leaked. It has recently been reported that Samsung could phase out its Galaxy Note series of phones. So if the Galaxy Z Fold Lite is really around $1000 in price, it could be destined to take the place of the Note series.
