Samsung, together with SK Telecom, has released a new device in South Korea – Samsung Galaxy A Quantum. This is the world’s first 5G smartphone with a chipset made of a quantum random number generator (QRNG).
Galaxy A Quantum is a complete copy of Galaxy A71 5G. The smartphone is equipped with a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with Full HD + resolution and a fingerprint scanner. On the back is a four-camera unit consisting of a main 64MP camera, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro, and a 5MP depth sensor. The resolution of the front camera is 32MP.
Galaxy A Quantum is equipped with an Exynos 980 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of memory, and a slot for microSD memory cards. The phone runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0. Its connectivity features include GPS, 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi AC, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Inside is a 4500mAh battery with support for fast charging with a capacity of 25 watts.
As for the chip, QRNG is able to generate random and unpredictable encryption keys. Unlike conventional encryption methods based only on mathematics, quantum encryption involves physics. To do this, the chip uses an LED and a CMOS sensor – as a quantum particle is a random photon that reads the camera. All this was placed in a small chip measuring 2.5 × 2.5 mm.
Quantum encryption in the Galaxy A Quantum smartphone has already been implemented in services for the South Korean market – in SK Pay for contactless payments or Initial for the generation of security certificates. It comes with Samsung Pay and QRNG chipset. The phone will be available in black, blue and silver.
So, how much does it cost to have this special device powered by quantum technology? Galaxy A Quantum, which is basically a re-branded Samsung Galaxy A71, will be available for pre-order in South Korea starting tomorrow. It is a matter of curiosity about how much demand the device, which will take place on the shelves with the price tag of $530 on 22 May.
