On January 8, Samsung released a new product – the 990 EVO SSD, which is the first SSD to support both PCIe 4.0×4 and PCIe 5.0×2 channels.
The 990 EVO is aimed at the mid-market, is 2280 M.2, weighs about 9g, has a maximum continuous read/write speed of 5000MB/s and 4200MB/s, and a maximum random read/write speed of 700K IOPS and 800K IOPS, respectively.
It adopts Samsung’s V-NAND TLC, equipped with a self-developed master control chip, MTBF is 1500000 hours, and supports Samsung Magician’s SSD management software.
In addition, the Samsung 990 EVO can be said to be a PCIe 5.0 SSD, but with only two channels, the theoretical bandwidth is the same as PCIe 4.0’s four channels.
According to the general SSD, if the interface is PCIe 5.0 x2, then inserted into the PCIe 4.0 x4 specification M.2 slot, also 2 channels, then the speed will be halved. However, the 990 EVO is different, and it can be used with PCIe 4.0 x4 without slowing down.
At present, the launch time and specific pricing of the Samsung 990 EVO SSD are not clear, should be available soon.
