As per recent updates from Chromeunboxed, it appears that the much-anticipated Chromebook venture featuring the advanced Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c+ third-gen processors has been called off. Consequently, the prospect of witnessing this robust gadget with its remarkable battery life and the impressive capabilities of ARM processors on Chromebooks might not materialize. On a positive note, the Chromebook tablet initiative utilizing the MediaTek MT8188 chip remains steadily on track and will debut in the future.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c+ third-generation chip, unveiled in December 2021, was engineered using a cutting-edge 6nm manufacturing process. It is the premier 6nm PC processor, a significant advancement from the preceding 8nm generation. Notably, its GPU performance has been amplified by an impressive 70%, while the CPU performance has surged by 60%. Throughout the development phase, several prototype boards came into the spotlight, bearing names like “Herobrine,” “Evoker,” “Zombie,” “Senor,” “Piglin,” “Hoglin,” and “Villager.” Interestingly, these monikers are inspired by characters from the Minecraft universe. Interestingly, recent codebase commits in the Chromium repository indicate the abandonment of these boards, although the reasons for this shift remain undisclosed.
In parallel, the project centered around the Chromebook tablet equipped with the MediaTek MT8188 chip presses forward. Notably, a pivotal development board, codenamed “Geralt,” is currently undergoing testing, with other iterations in the works.
The shelving of the Chromebook initiative featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c+ third-gen chip is indeed regrettable. This is particularly disheartening since the complete potential of ARM processors in Chromebooks, characterized by stellar performance, prolonged battery life, and seamless compatibility with Android applications, has not yet been fully harnessed. The precedent set by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c second-generation chip demonstrated in devices such as the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3 and Duet 5 highlighted significant strides. Consequently, the industry was enthusiastic about the forthcoming generation of instruments to elevate the experience. Presently, there’s a sense that these aspirations might not come to fruition.
