Nothing released Nothing Phone (2) in July last year and, as is customary, consumers expect its successor to be released in the near future. However, Nothing founder and CEO Carl Pei announced a surprise announcement today: Nothing Phone (3) will be delayed until 2025.
Igeekphone noted that this broke with the annual practice of high-end smartphones, and also made industry people curious, and Nothing chose to delay the release of the reason – artificial intelligence (AI).
Pei said that unlike most vendors today, who are keen to advertise various AI features, Nothing will not release a new machine next month and trumpet its AI features. Instead, they chose to spend more time “redefining the user interface and integrating AI at the smartphone system level, resulting in a highly personalized and dynamic user experience.”
Carl Pei mentioned the concept of “post-application era” several times in the video, which sounds as marketing as “artificial intelligence”, and also contradicts Pei’s previous insinuation of competitors who blindly pursue “artificial intelligence”. Pei says Nothing wants to “build a bridge” between today’s app-dominated world and the “post-app era” of the future.
GsmArena said there was speculation that the delay in the release of the Phone (3) could be related to its poor sales of the Phone (2). By contrast, the mid-range Nothing Phone (2a) seems to be more successful, so Nothing doesn’t want to risk a Phone (3) that might go the way of Phone (2).
