According to the Associated Press, at present, due to the large number of unauthorized disposable e-cigarettes entering the U.S. market, the types of e-cigarettes sold in the United States have greatly increased to more than 9,000.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claims that it rejects about 99% of e-cigarette sales applications and only approves a small number of e-cigarettes aimed at adult smokers. This shows that although the FDA wants to tightly control the e-cigarette market, it has had little success. Most disposable e-cigarettes contain sweet and fruity flavors, which makes them a favorite product for teens.
Analysis data shows that in 2022, inexpensive disposable e-cigarettes will account for 40% of the retail market share of e-cigarettes in the United States, with a market size of about $7 billion. There are currently more than 5,800 disposable e-cigarette products with unique flavors on the market, up more than a dozen times from 365 at the beginning of 2020.
Under pressure from politicians, parents and major e-cigarette companies, the FDA recently sent warning letters to more than 200 stores that sell single-use e-cigarettes, banning the sale of offending e-cigarette products. Brian King, director of the FDA’s Tobacco Center, said the agency’s determination to crack down on illegal e-cigarettes is unwavering.
