Not long after Qualcomm launched the high-end Snapdragon 855+ chipset. Recently, a report appeared revealing plans to launch MediaTek’s new mobile processor. Accordingly, the new chipset is called MediaTek Helio G90 and it will focus on mobile games. And today, the Taiwan-based company has just confirmed that this dedicated game-specific chipset will launch an event in Shanghai on July 30.
Unfortunately, MediaTek has yet to disclose any information regarding its new chipset. However, knowledgeable speculation that this SoC will be built on the 12nm process and use the eight-core CPU. The main difference of the new G90 may come in the GPU department, although this information has not been validated by MediaTek.
MediaTek often relies on PowerVR and Mali solutions to develop its GPU line. Therefore, the company is also expected to introduce the new generation of Mali-G76 and Power-VR GM9446, integrated into the new Helio G90 chipset. In addition, the company will introduce GPU improvement software just like Huawei’s Turbo GPU for smartphones.
Currently, there are no smartphone manufacturers to confirm that they will use MediaTek’s new chipset. Therefore, perhaps we have to wait until the launch event on July 30 to know this information.
In fact and looking at the market it will be interesting to understand how MediaTek will connect with the gaming smartphone market. We say this for a simple matter and that is almost common sense. MediaTek chipsets have never been very popular for their gaming performance.
In addition, their graphics cards are often weaker than the competition. However, this track record sometimes means nothing. That said, things could change soon and maybe gaming smartphone chipsets will become one of MediaTek‘s most lucrative business areas.
