In addition to its first Dimensity 1050 that supports millimeter waves, MediaTek also released another 5G mobile processor today, “MediaTek Dimensity 930”, which seems to be an upgraded version of Dimensity 920, but the parameters are very strange.
The MediaTek Dimensity 930 is still manufactured by TSMC’s 6nm process and integrates two A78 and six A55 CPU cores. The highest frequencies are 2.2GHz and 2.0GHz respectively. Compared with Dimensity 920, the former is reduced by a full 300MHz.
The GPU graphics core is even more unexpected. It has changed from the original ARM Mali-G68 MC4 to the IMG BMX-8-256. This is the first time MediaTek has used Imagination’s graphics core solution (I used PowerVR many times earlier).
The IMG B series was released as early as October 2020. It is its 11th generation product. It has an advanced multi-core architecture and supports the advanced image compression technology IMGIC. The BMX series focuses on graphics processing. The core achieves the best balance of fill rate and computing power and is suitable for complex UI fields such as mainstream mobile games and digital TV.
MediaTek also did not disclose the specific specifications of IMG BMX-8-256, but only announced the video codec capabilities. The encoding supports H.264, H.265, and the decoding supports H.264, H.265, VP9, MPEG-1/2 /4, but the highest resolution is only 2K30fps, which is not as good as the Mali-G68 4K30fps.
Other aspects are similar to the Dimensity 920, MiraVision mobile display, HyperEngine 3.0 Lite game engine, screen resolution up to 2520×1080, refresh rate up to 120Hz, the camera supports a single up to 108 Megapixels (optional) or 64 Megapixels, memory support LPDDR4X, LPDDR5, storage supports UFS 3.1.
Integrated 5G multi-mode baseband, supports 2CC dual-carrier aggregation, FDD+TDD hybrid duplex, peak download rate 2.77Gbps, also supports dual-band Beidou navigation, 1T1R Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, and so on. Terminals using the Dimensity 930 5G platform are expected to be available in the second quarter.
