The annual COMPUTEX 2024 has kicked off, this year’s conference with “AI in tandem, Create the Future” as the main axis, technology companies from all over the world have gathered here to bring their latest technologies and products in AI.
As a mobile chip giant, Mediatek also exhibited advanced AI technology and innovative applications in a wide range of fields at COMPUTEX this year, and Dr. CAI Lixing, Vice chairman and CEO of Mediatek, delivered a keynote speech on June 4, introducing how Mediatek’s technology enables the ubiquitous AI era. Continue to transform the mobile communications, transportation, smart home, enterprise and industrial environments.
At this exhibition, Mediatek also launched two chip products, namely Kompanio 838 mobile computing chip for high-end Chromebooks, and Pentonic 800 smart TV chip for 4K high-end smart TVS and display devices, both products have excellent performance and AI computing power.
Among them, the Kompanio 838 mobile computing chip is equipped with an efficient eight-core CPU, with excellent performance and multitasking capabilities, and can provide all-day battery life for thin and light Chromebook products.
The Kompanio 838 integrates the AI processor NPU 650 to support the AI enhancements required for Chromebook products with high energy efficiency. Kompanio 838 also supports DDR4 and LPDDR4X memory to meet the broader product design needs of device manufacturers. Compared to its predecessor, Kompanio 838 has double the memory bandwidth to deliver higher data throughput.
The chip built-in Imagiq 7 series ISP image processor, provides high-quality HDR imaging effect, supports dual camera and dark light shooting function, can provide clear image quality in different lighting environments.
In addition, Kompanio 838 also supports AV1 hardware video decoding, which helps users seamlessly and at high speeds transfer 4K streaming content. The chip supports dual 4K display, providing users with more content display space.
In terms of connectivity, the Kompanio 838 also supports MediaTek Filogic Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity technologies, which bring Chromebooks up to 1.9Gbps network connection rates, while supporting 2×2 antennas and WPA 3. Provides a more stable and reliable connection and security.
Another Mediatek Pentonic 800 smart TV chip provides superior video, audio and gaming experiences for a variety of 4K display devices, including smart TVS, smart monitors, commercial displays and other large screen applications.
Compared to its predecessor, the Pentonic 800’s built-in AI processor delivers 50% better performance and up to 60% lower memory bandwidth usage. Powerful AI processors support a variety of AI image enhancement technologies, Including AI Super resolution (AI-SR 3.0), AI-Contrast 2.0, AI Scene Recognition (AI-picture Quality Scene Recognition 2.0+) and AI object recognition image enhancement (AI-Picture) Quality Object Recognition 2.5+).
These technologies significantly enhance the picture quality of display devices, reduce picture noise, and provide multiple enhancements for streaming media and gaming. To further optimize the gaming experience, the Pentonic 800 supports a variable refresh rate (VRR) of 4K or 2K 165Hz.
The Pentonic 800 hardware video decoding engine supports mainstream formats such as HEVC, AV1, AVS3 High Profile and VVC (H.266), providing high-quality 4K video playback.
The chip also supports MEMC, TCON and high resolution audio schemes. Device manufacturers have the flexibility to integrate MediaTek Filogic Wi-Fi wireless connectivity solutions to provide high-speed, low-latency and reliable network connectivity.
In addition, Filogic’s combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth solution provides seamless connectivity between the screen and peripherals, including game controllers and wireless headsets.
In fact, Mediatek began to invest in AI in 2016. In 2018, they built a multi-core artificial intelligence processor APU in the Helio P60 SoC for the first time. After the outbreak of generative AI, Mediatek also introduced generative AI technology to the Dimensity 9300 flagship mobile platform for the first time. The seventh generation AI processor APU 790 is designed for generative AI, supporting the terminal to run up to 33 billion parameters AI language model, but also through the advanced hardware Compression technology NeuroPilot Compression, greatly reduce the AI large model on the terminal memory occupation. Let generative AI run smoothly on the end side.
Not only that, Mediatek introduced generative AI technology to the mid-end mobile platform Tianguet 8300 for the first time in the industry, and supported the 10 billion parameter AI large language model, promoting the popularization of generative AI mobile phones to a wider consumer market.
With the release of the Kompanio 838 and Pentonic 800 chip platforms, Mediatek is further bringing AI technology to more mobile terminals, bringing innovative experiences, and accelerating the arrival of the full-scene AI era.
