According to previous reports, Huawei has faced the constraints of the United States in the near future, so it decided to accelerate the research and development and mass production of self-developed chips. The self-sufficiency rate of Huawei smartphones using the Kirin processor in the second half of last year was less than 40%. It has risen to 45% in the first half of this year but is expected to increase to 60% in the second half of this year.
At the same time, Huawei will significantly increase the production of TSMC’s 7nm chip in the second half of the year, which is expected to exceed Apple’s largest 7nm customer. According to industry news, Huawei will introduce the Kirin 985 chip with 7nm+EUV (Ultraviolet Lithography) process in the second half of this year.
By convention, Kirin 985 should be an upgraded version of the Kirin 980, which is expected to increase the CPU/GPU frequency and further improve performance.
According to foreign media PhoneArena, EUV (Extreme UV Lithography) uses light to etch transistors on silicon wafers. This technology allows the position of the transistors to be more precise, while the transistor density on the chip can be increased by 20%, resulting in a unit area. The chip is more powerful and consumes less power.
The first smartphone chip using EUV (Ultraviolet Lithography) is likely to be Huawei’s Kirin 985, using TSMC’s 7nm process. With the addition of EUV, the Kirin 985 is faster and consumes less power.
According to the report, EUV will show real value in the subsequent chips (5nm or newer process), and it does not show real potential at 7nm. Although Moore’s Law says that the number of transistors doubles every 18 months to 24 months, it is likely that physical limits will soon be reached, and EUV will help improve the situation.

Foreign media expects that the first terminal will be the Huawei Mate 30 series released in the second half of the year. The new generation of Kirin chips from the Mate series is also the practice of Huawei. The P30 series will be released in Paris on March 26th and will still be equipped with Kirin 980 chips.
