The Kirin 970 chipset that powers the Huawei Mate 10 series and the newly unleashed Huawei P20 series is a strong competitor for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset. Hence, the Kirin 980 SoC that is likely to arrive first one the Mate 20 series that is expected to release in October this year is dubbed as a major rival for the Snapdragon 845. Leaked information reveals that the Huawei’s Kirin 980 is a 7nm SoC and it is better than the Snapdragon 845 in all the major aspects.
Fresh information reveals that the energy efficiency of the Kirin 980 SoC is similar to that of Snapdragon 845. Also, it is speculated that it can deliver 15 percent better performance than Snapdragon 845. Recent reports have revealed Huawei has employed big.LITTLE architecture for the Kirin 980 SoC. It is rumored to include Cortex A77 quad-core processor and Cortex A55 quad-core processor. The SoC is speculated to deliver a clocking speed of 2.6 GHz. In single-core test of Geekbench, it is estimated to score between 2,600 and 2,700 points.
It is speculated that the Kirin 980 SoC is optimized for Sony IMX600 image sensor. The SoC is likely to include an upgraded NPU unit for handling AI. Recent leaks have claimed that the company will be starting the production of Kirin 980 early this and it will be increasing the production by July this year. Rumors have it that Huawei may debut the Kirin 980 powered by July this year. Judging from the 356,918 AnTuTu score of Mate 20, it is speculated that the Kirin 980 will offer monstrous performance.
