Huawei held the Kirin 980 media communication meeting in Shanghai this morning, this is the first time this flagship SoC debuted in China after the release of Kirin 980 at IFA.
Kirin 980 is the world’s first 7-nanometer process chip, which not only has significant improvements in performance, energy efficiency, mobile communication connectivity but also enhances AI computing power and enriches AI application scenarios. This chip has created a number of “world first” at the beginning of its release: Kirin 980 is the world’s first 7-nanometer SoC, which has 20% better performance than the Kirin 970’s 10-nanometer process. Increased by 40%; in addition, 6.9 billion transistors are integrated on the fingernail-sized chip, which is 55% higher than the previous 5.5 billion transistors.
Kirin 980 is also the world’s first chip to use the Cortex-A76 architecture, which is 75% better than the previous generation A73 and 58% more energy efficient. Compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, it can be 37% higher in performance and 32% higher in energy efficiency. It is worth mentioning that the CPU of Kirin 980 adopts a multi-core intelligent scheduling mechanism, and has a CPU architecture of 2 cores, 2 cores, 4 small cores, that is, two 2.6 GHz A76 cores, two cores of 1.92 GHz A76, and four cores. 1.8GHz A55 small core.
This makes the chip more flexible in task scheduling and reduces CPU power consumption. On the GPU side, the Kirin 980 is the first commercial ARM Mali-G76, which has a 46% improvement in performance and a 17% improvement in energy efficiency. This means that the power consumption of the chip will be reduced and the heat will be slowed down. There is a good improvement.
In terms of taking pictures, Kirin 980 adopted a dual-core NPU design. According to the official, Kirin 980 can recognize 4,500 images per minute, and the recognition speed is 120% higher than that of the previous generation. It also supports AI such as face recognition, object recognition, object detection, and intelligent translation. The scene can give the user a better experience.
In addition, Kirin 980 is the world’s first chip to use 1.4Gbps Cat.21 baseband and LPDDR4X-2133 memory, and it is the first mobile platform to provide 5G capabilities. In terms of Wi-Fi, Kirin 980 uses the wireless chip Hi1103 to support 160M bandwidth, and the theoretical peak download rate can reach 1.7Gbps, which is 1.7 times of the industry’s same level. Overall, the Kirin 980 is currently the most powerful flagship SoC, with improved performance and reduced power consumption making it more balanced and competitive.
