According to a recent interview with Japan’s Kyodo News, President Masamichi Terabatake of Japan Tobacco (JT) reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintain its presence in the Russian market and continue its tobacco business. While JT still has the option to withdraw from the Russian market, they expressed a strong desire to sustain their operations there.
Furthermore, Terabatake mentioned the company’s intention to retain employees in Ukraine and has already initiated a partial resumption of production. JT currently operates four factories in Russia, employing approximately 4,000 individuals across various roles in production and management.
On March 10, 2022, Japan Tobacco Russia announced a pause on new investments and additional marketing initiatives in Russia. Additionally, last year, the company temporarily suspended its operations in Kremenchuk, a city in central Ukraine.
Japan Tobacco’s products are widely distributed in 130 countries worldwide. Since it entered the Russian cigarette market in 1992, the company has invested over $4.6 billion in Russia over the past two decades.
