At this week’s iPhone launch event, Apple unveiled a significant update to its Voice Memos app, introducing a multi-track recording feature. However, this new functionality is currently exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, as it relies on the enhanced capabilities of the A18 Pro chip and the four “studio-grade microphones” available only in these Pro devices.
The multi-track recording feature allows iPhone 16 Pro users to layer new audio tracks over existing recordings. For instance, a user could record a guitar track and then add vocals or another instrument on top of it. Apple explains that this works by having the Voice Memos app play audio through the iPhone’s speakers while simultaneously recording the user’s voice. The app employs “advanced processing” technology to separate the new track from the background sound, resulting in a clean, professional-grade recording—without the need for headphones. This means users can isolate and edit individual layers of their recordings.
Apple also revealed that the iPhone 16 Pro series introduces several creative post-production audio tools for videos. Using advanced intelligence and machine learning, users can mix and enhance audio tracks to emphasize a subject’s voice or create studio-quality effects. The system can even present ambient noise as surround sound while keeping vocal tracks front and center. Additionally, the wind noise reduction feature utilizes powerful algorithms to minimize unwanted background noise and improve overall audio clarity.
Both Pro models come equipped with four studio-grade microphones capable of recording spatial audio in video mode, enabling users to enjoy an immersive experience through AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, or any surround sound system.
