The Huawei MateBook X Pro is Huawei’s more powerful follow up to last year’s excellent MateBook X, and as the name might imply it is aimed squarely at Apple’s MacBook Pro. PC laptops have come a long way in the last few years, with good design, build and performance all hallmarks of Apple’s laptop line – now common in the $1500 or above category. It would be fair to say that the MateBook X Pro has more than a passing resemblance to Apple’s top-end laptop. It’s not that it’s a carbon copy, more a machine that takes just the good bits.
Design
At 0.57-inch thin and weighing just 2.93 lbs, the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro is equally light, portable and powerful with the full functionality of a PC. The notebook sports an elegant metallic unibody with diamond cut edges, delivering a premium and chic style. The Huawei Matebook X Pro feels bigger than Huawei’s original laptop thanks to subtle changes the company made to its chassis design, screen, and internals. Measuring 14.6mm thick at its widest point and weighing 2.8 pounds, the new laptop takes up more space than its predecessor. While most OEMs live and die by the “thin and light” doctrine, Huawei sacrificed millimeters and ounces to make space for a more powerful CPU, two graphics cards, and a more versatile array of ports.
Display
The mammoth touchscreen on the Matebook X Pro adds to the purity of its design—while it’s a 13-inch notebook, the 13.9-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio makes it feel like a larger device. A mere 4.4mm of bezel surrounds a 3000×2000-pixel panel, giving the device a 91-percent screen-to-body ratio. Even after seeing the Matebook X Pro at a briefing over a month ago, my first reaction upon opening our review unit for the first time was, “Wow, that’s a big display.” The quality of the touchscreen combined with the nearly nonexistent bezels and its aspect ratio made the Matebook X Pro a solid device to use as my regular work laptop.
Hardware
Windows 10 Home Signature Edition comes clean with no bloatware to slow you down. 8th Gen Intel Core i7 8550U/i5 8250U processor boosts performance up to 40% over its predecessor. The base configuration consists of an 8th gen Intel Core i5-8250U, 8 GB of LPDDR3 memory, a GeForce MX150 card with 2 GB of DDR5 memory, and a 256 GB NVMe SSD.
Features
The MateBook X Pro also features a fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button, two USB-C ports (one with Thunderbolt 3), one USB-A port, HUAWEI MateBook X Pro packs a monstrous 57.4 Wh (typical capacity) battery into its slim body. Enjoy up to 12 hours of video playback, 14 hours of office work, or 15 hours of web browsing. Have a worry-free full day of battery when you travel. The MateBook X Pro might be thin, but it still has a single full-sized USB 3.0 port along side a USB-C port and a Thunderbolt 3 port.
Either of the USB-C-shaped ports can be used to charge the machine, while there’s a traditional headphones socket, but no card reader. A recessed camera sits discreetly on the keyboard and pops up only when you need it, a safeguard for your privacy. One-touch power button with optimized BIOS powers up and logs in your computer in 7.8 seconds. Safe, fast and user-friendly.

Conclusion
Huawei’s Matebook X Pro is something special – not that we expected any less after last year’s model. Indeed, while that laptop struggled to gain the recognition it deserved, this 2018 re-do is better in almost every respect: it’s faster, it has a great, bezel-free display and, well, it looks seriously good, too.
