Huawei held the 2019 Huawei flagship new product launch ceremony, launching a series of new products such as Mate 30 series flagship mobile phone, VR GLASS, Huawei smart screen. The Mate 30 series 5G version, which embodies Huawei’s cutting-edge technology, has attracted a lot of attention. After all, this is the new 5G flagship of the next communication era in which Huawei’s Mate 20 X (5G) is launched.
In the interview after the press conference, Huawei’s consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong also said with full confidence that the Mate30 series 5G version is Huawei’s second-generation 5G mobile phone, which is more than half a year to more than one year.
The reason why Huawei’s Mate 30 series 5G version is Huawei’s second-generation 5G mobile phone, the core reason is that it is equipped with the world’s first flagship 5G SoC Kirin 990 5G, the first 5G Modem integrated into the SoC chip, the end of the previous 5G mobile phone must be plugged 5G The history of the baseband brings lower power consumption, while the RF and antenna are also leading.
At the Shanghai conference at the time, we also learned that Huawei’s Mate30 series 5G version is not listed at the same time as other products, but will be listed later. It is now at the end of October, Huawei’s Mate30 series 5G version has finally arrived, and will start pre-sale on October 23, and will be officially launched on November 1. We have already got the Huawei Mate 30 5G in advance, and then we will bring you detailed experience testing.
Design & Appearance
Since the Mate9 period, the Huawei Mate family has formed a regular ID with a straight-screen, “Pro” model with curved screen design. The arrival of the Huawei Mate30 series naturally continued. Huawei Mate30 5G uses a 6.62-inch OLED full-screen front with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels. You can see that Huawei Mate30 5G has a very narrow width on all four sides and maintains a consistent width, which supports unlocking the fingerprint inside the screen.
Compared with the previous generation products, the color value has a very obvious improvement. The most conspicuous place is that on the basis of the extremely narrow four-sided frame, the four corners have around transition. The middle of the forehead is adjusted into a small notch, which accommodates a front camera and a number of sensors. This non-display area is not abrupt due to its small area and width. The front view is very comfortable. In terms of color matching, Huawei Mate30 5G has six different color versions of Galaxy Silver, Roland Purple, Bright Black, Danxia Orange, and Qingshan Mountain. In the hands of the author is the green hills. It is stylish and beautiful on the basis of a comfortable feel.
Last year, Huawei’s Mate20 series of “Super Run Eyes” design is highly recognizable, and it has been talked about now. The new Huawei Mate 30 5G, while continuing the classic design, the rectangle becomes a ring, still unique. We have experienced Huawei Mate30 Pro in the previous evaluation. It uses the ring screen more daringly, cancels the physical volume button, and brings a new way of interaction. Also equipped with magnetic suspension sound technology, the call sound is generated by the screen vibration.
The Huawei Mate 30 5G in our hands is a traditional design that most people are used to, retaining traditional physical buttons and earpieces. Just like the models of Huawei’s Mate series, Huawei Mate30 5G is more widely used for care and care, so it also retains 3.5mm headphone jack. It is worth mentioning that the edge of the Huawei Mate30 5G rear cover frame and the middle frame of the mobile phone are an almost seamless transition, the side curvature is large, the weight of the body is only 196 grams, and the overall feel of the handle is more comfortable than the previous generation.

About Kirin 990 5G
It is well known that the Huawei Mate30 series 5G version is the first model equipped with the Kirin 990 5G. So before discussing the 5G experience of Huawei Mate30 5G, the Kirin 990 5G is a topic that cannot be avoided.
As early as 2018, Huawei launched the industry’s first commercial 5G baseband solution, Barong 5G01, which is mainly for CPE applications. At the beginning of 2019, it brought the industry’s first 5G multi-mode baseband Baron 5000, with Kirin 980 for smartphones. First started at Huawei Mate 20 X (5G). Huawei has invested more than 10 years in 5G R&D, and 5G core patents account for more than 20%, ranking first in the industry.
The Kirin 990 5G is the industry’s first flagship 5G SoC. It is the first 5G baseband plug-in solution to integrate the 5G Modem into the SoC chip for the first time, with the best 5G experience and the best AI computing power. The Kirin 990 5G uses the leading 7nm+ EUV EUV lithography process to integrate up to 10.3 billion transistors. It is the 5G SoC with the largest number of transistors, the most complete function, and the highest complexity. In terms of 5G, Kirin 990 5G is the first to support 5G dual-mode full Netcom, with a downlink rate of up to 2.3Gbps and an uplink rate of up to 1.25Gbps.
5G test experience
As the second generation 5G mobile phone after Huawei Mate 20 X (5G), Huawei Mate30 series 5G version has made great efforts in research and development. The body has up to 21 antennas, and the upper, middle and lower parts are designed according to the actual use scene. The antenna group covers the full angle of the whole scene used by the mobile phone vertical screen and horizontal screen. Not only that, thanks to the Kirin 990 5G blessing, Huawei Mate30 series 5G version fully adapts to the 5G/4G/3G/2G frequency band of the three major domestic operators, and supports 5G dual-mode full-network communication; supports 5G+4G dual-card dual-standby 5G and 4G cards can be online at the same time, can achieve one card 5G another card VoLTE, or dual card VoLTE voice, Internet.
The 5G frequency band supports N79, N78, N77, N41, N38, N27, N3, and N1 frequency bands. It is the most widely used 5G mobile phone in the current frequency band, and can fully cope with the communication needs under different networks and different networking modes. 5G network The measured rate can reach 1516Mbps.
This time, our location for Huawei’s Mate30 5G 5G functional test experience is still selected in the old local Unicom business hall.
Network anchoring
If you pay attention to the other series of 5G mobile phone evaluations that the author has done before, you should be impressed by the pain of anchoring the 5G network. Before the 5G network and its packages were officially put on the market, the operator’s test network had quite a headache. The most important one is anchoring performance and stability between the operator base station and the terminal that has been folded many times.
The author has met different terminals of different brand manufacturers more than once. After supporting the anchor point, it supports tens of seconds of beacons and the data network all falls back to the LTE model. Individual models have to manually restart the mobile phone to switch from LTE to 5G. In a certain 5G mobile phone test, the author even needs engineers to help with manual access.
This has a certain relationship with the mode principle of the LTE+5G base station that the NSA network has to use at the same time: the NSA networking mode cannot be separated from the 4G base station for independent networking, and the debugging of the neighboring area becomes a difficult point to be overcome.
As can be seen from the above, Huawei Mate30 5G switches 5G from 4G and anchors without any delay. This conversion is even faster than switching between our 4G/3G/2G networks.
And it needs to be clear that there is no one-to-one manual tuning between the machine used in this evaluation and the Unicom operator’s business hall where we are located. The whole process is naturally anchored. From this, we can see that the carrier’s NSA network has matured, and the degree of cooperation between Huawei’s second-generation 5G mobile phone supporting the SA/NSA 5G dual-module network and the carrier network has reached unprecedented levels. height.
5G network speed measurement
In terms of network speed, we use mainstream Speedtest software for testing. It should be mentioned that because the operator tests the network instability, the final network speed may be different from the network speed after the formal commercial use. 4G network speed measurement on the left, 5G network speed measurement on the right
Due to the limitations of the on-site network environment, the ideal peaks under laboratory conditions cannot be achieved under either 4G or 5G networks. The above is the 4G and 5G network speed measurement that the author conducted at the same test location.
It can be seen that in our test environment, the download rate of Huawei Mate30 5G 5G network is 46.8 times that of the 4G network, and the upload speed is 19.2 times the latter.
300 megabit broadband speed (mobile Wi-Fi connection)
The upload and download rate of Huawei Mate30 5G in a 5G network environment is far more than the author’s 300 megabit broadband (mobile Wi-Fi connection).
In such a 5G network environment, the download application can read the effect of the full progress bar immediately after clicking, and there is basically no loading time when the webpage is opened, and the page is opened by clicking. Feel free to pull the progress bar of 1080P online video, almost no buffer is seen in the 5G network environment, and the basic instant buffer is completed.
However, there is still such a problem, that is, the application scenario under 5G has not kept up. At present, using the 5G network to deal with the applications and requirements of the 4G era is indeed overkill. Software vendors need to develop and iterate content to keep up with 5G networks and 5G. The speed of development of the terminal.
Network delay experience
I have been very concerned about network latency. In the past 5G evaluation, the author often showed the delay of testing 4G and 5G through the mobile game delay, but since then, the author gradually found that such test methods have limitations in some scenarios, after all, you can not Playing games all the time.
Next, we test the delay in the daily use scenario. The specific test plan is to use everyone’s recurring – ping Baidu homepage. I will use the Huawei Mate30 5G to ping the network to compare the test results under the 4G network.
The above is the delayed performance of Huawei Mate30 5G ping Baidu 4G (left) and 5G (right) networks. It can be seen that the average delay in the 4G network is 73ms, and the average delay in the 5G network is 39ms.
The 5G network delay of Huawei Mate30 5G is about 34ms slower than that of the 4G network environment. It can be said that the improvement that I have seen so far is the most obvious. Of course, there is still a long way to go compared to the ideal state of 1ms delay advertised by a large number of media. However, this level of the problem has nothing to do with the terminal manufacturers.
At present, the 5G phase is mainly based on the NSA networking mode, and the user plane transmits through 5G, and the control plane signaling is still transmitted through 4G. That is to say, the total delay in the non-independent networking mode is that the 4G control plane signaling delay superimposes the 5G user plane delay, and then superimposes the Internet delay.
Therefore, at the current stage, it is not only the game delay but also the network delay of all 5G mobile phones under daily use. Only in the future SA network mode is perfect, kicking off the 4G control plane signaling delay, the lower and more ideal delay is possible. It is worth mentioning that only Huawei 5G mobile phones currently support the SA/NSA 5G dual-module network.
In other words, no matter at which stage, which period, and which network environment, Huawei Mate30 series 5G version can be smoothly transitioned and used normally.
Power consumption test under 5G network
Before the launch of Huawei’s Mate30 series 5G version, whether it is the Kirin platform or other camp’s 5G platform, the 5G mobile phones that have been released need to be connected to the 5G network to achieve 5G network connection, so the initial 5G device power consumption is mostly more than other mobile phones. high.
In view of the high heat generation of 5G power consumption, Huawei’s Mate30 5G built-in Kirin 990 5G is specially optimized for energy efficiency, claiming to be the best in the industry. In theory, the 1.2Gbps downlink rate consumes only 622mAh, which is better than the combination of Xiaolong 855+ Xiaolong X50. 20% lower.
I will turn off the automatic screen brightness of Huawei Mate30 5G in my hand, manually adjust the brightness to about 50%, clear the background of the mobile phone, and use the GPU GFOPS to record the power consumption of the whole mobile phone in the background. Then use Huawei Mate30 5G to download a large file such as the “Peace Elite” installation package in a single-threaded system using the system’s own browser under the 5G network.
The average power consumption of the downloaded files of the 5G flagship of a certain brand under the 5G network is about 4.5W, and the peak value is close to 6W. This figure is almost similar to the power consumption of large mobile games. The average power consumption of Huawei Mate30 5G under the same conditions is about 2.9W, and the peak value is only 3.5W.
From the above comparison, it can be clearly seen that Huawei Mate30 5G is the second generation 5G mobile phone of Huawei. Compared with the energy consumption performance gap of the original 5G mobile phone, it is definitely not compensated by software tuning optimization alone. Power consumption control has always been the strength of Huawei’s mobile phones.
Huawei Mate30 5G is specially optimized for the built-in Kirin 990 5G, and the “best in the industry” title now looks like it is not a fake name.
Hardware
Kirin 990 5G uses two large cores (developed based on Cortex-A76) + two large cores (developed based on Cortex-A76) + four small core (Cortex-A55) three-speed energy-efficient architecture, the highest frequency can reach 2.86GHz Compared with the mainstream flagship chips in the industry, single-core performance is 10% higher and multicore performance is 9% higher.
In terms of energy efficiency, it is fine-tuned for different sizes of nuclear. The super-nuclear energy efficiency is 12%, the large-core energy efficiency is 35%, and the small-core energy efficiency is 15%, which brings faster mobile application opening speed and smoother daily use experience. At the same time, the industry’s first integrated 16-core Mali-G76 GPU, compared with the industry’s mainstream flagship chip, the graphics processing performance of 6%, the energy efficiency of 20%, achieving industry-leading performance and energy efficiency.
Memory storage supports LPDDR4X, UFS 3.0, and redesigned smart cache for high-load gaming applications, reducing bandwidth requirements between GPU and memory by 40% while reducing memory power consumption by 20%. Take a look at the popular mobile game “Peace Elite”, the highest frame rate can reach 60 frames. The continuous read speed of flash memory has exceeded 1800M/s.
Cameras
The Mate series has always been an important part of Huawei’s dual flagship strategy, and it is a master in imagery.
Huawei Mate 30 Pro is equipped with super-sensing Leica movie four shots: 40 Megapixel movie camera (super wide-angle, f / 1.8 aperture) + 40 Megapixel super-sensing camera (wide-angle, f / 1.6 aperture, support OIS) + 8 Megapixels long Focus camera (f/2.4 aperture, support OIS) + a 3D deep sense camera.
Huawei Mate 30 5G and Huawei Mate30 camera specifications are exactly the same, it is second only to Huawei Mate30 Pro, equipped with super-sensitive Leica three-shot: 40 Megapixel super-sensing camera (wide-angle, f / 1.8 aperture) + 16 Megapixels super wide-angle Camera (f/2.2 aperture), 8 megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.4 aperture, support OIS).
Samples
In Super Macro mode, Huawei Mate30 5G can clearly capture the details of the petals and the pollen details on the flower and enlarge the microscopic world. This is the backlight proof of the “straight” sun. You can see that the HDR capability of the Huawei Mate30 5G is quite powerful.
As shown above, even in the fog, the main camera and super-wide-angle camera of Huawei Mate30 5G are not affected, and the two cameras have the same white balance and algorithm to maintain a uniform style.
Huawei Mate 30 5G supports 5x hybrid zoom and up to 30x digital zoom, enabling full focal length coverage for everyday photography needs.
Night photography and dark light photography have always been the home of Huawei mobile phones.
Huawei Mate 30 5G’s main camera upgrade is quite large. The 40-megapixel super-sensing camera creatively uses the RYYB filter array, which replaces the green pixel with yellow pixels, enabling the latter to pass both red and green light. This increases the amount of light entering the pixel by 40%.
It can be seen that in the nighttime environment, the picture taken by Huawei Mate 30 is pure and bright, the white balance is in place, the noise control is also very good, and the excellent resolution makes the details of the scene well preserved. The biggest feeling of shooting in several groups of pictures is that Huawei Mate30 5G anti-shake technology is excellent, and the filming rate is very high. The night scenes that used to be a headache are not found in Huawei Mate 30 5G.
It can be seen from the above comparison that in the extremely low light environment, only Huawei mobile phones can restore the full picture details. This year, the iPhone 11 series, which has painstakingly joined the night scene mode, is as helpless as this other extreme mobile phone.
Battery
Thanks to the Kirin 990 5G flagship SoC, the Huawei Mate30 5G, which is no longer plug-in baseband, has a more abundant space than other 5G mobile phones to place the battery. This time, the Huawei Mate30 5G has a 4200mAh large-capacity battery. Coupled with Huawei’s long-established power-saving optimization strategy, it can be expected to have a longer battery life than other 5G mobile phones, and then look at its battery life.
Regarding the power consumption under the 5G network, we have already shown it to everyone. The next test scenario is under the Wi-Fi connection that everyone is often in.
Clear the background, I use the BiliBili client to play online barrage video, 20% volume, 70% brightness. Starting from 100% power, after 1 hour, the remaining power is 94%. Power consumption is 6%. According to this power-down rate, in the same test environment, Huawei Mate 30 5G full power can continuously play online video for about 15 hours.
The Game life
Starting from 100% power, after 1 hour, the remaining power is 92%. It consumes 8% of electricity. According to this power-down rate, Huawei Mate30 5G is expected to eat chicken for more than 10 hours. However, it should be noted that the author has turned on the smart resolution option, the picture quality is HDR HD, and the number of frames is set to super high. If you adjust to the limit frame rate, the battery life may be slightly lower.
Charging
Huawei Mate30 5G is in charge of technology. This time, it has also cooperated with its own “Pro” model, equipped with up to 40W Huawei wired super fast charge.
It can be seen that the blood can be returned from 3% to 99% in 50 minutes after the screen is turned on. For a very large capacity battery with a capacity of 4200 mAh, this charging rate is very powerful. Imagine that when you just woke up, you can charge your mobile phone with no power, wash it, eat breakfast, and when you go out, the phone is almost fully charged, enough to cope with the heavy use of the day.
In the previous generation, wireless charging was also used as a distinguishing feature between Huawei Mate20 and Mate20 Pro. In this generation, Huawei’s Mate30 series products not only support 40W wired super-fast charging but also support 27W wireless super fast charging. Huawei Mate30 Pro even supports wireless reverse charging – charging other mobile phones that support wireless charging. It also appeared on Huawei Mate30 5G.
Verdict
In fact, for the “big family” of Huawei’s mobile phone product line, how to make a comprehensive and balanced choice of each mobile phone in terms of configuration choice, comprehensive optimization, innovation, and technology, is very challenging. The first is that its appearance does not differ from the Huawei Mate30, even the key indicators such as weight.
As the second-generation 5G flagship, thanks to the world’s first flagship 5G SoC, Huawei Mate30 5G significantly reduced the consumption of space inside the fuselage, while maintaining 5G performance while maintaining a light body of 196 grams. In this regard, we can look back at the “brick” posture of the first generation of 5G mobile phones, and you can feel the changes brought about by the leap of technology.
At the beginning of the 5G mobile phone, we saw too many 5G mobile phones in order to accommodate the external 5G baseband, to compromise the feel, compromise the brand characteristics, compromise the thickness of the fuselage, and even compromise the family design. And to the second generation 5G flagship Huawei Mate30 series 5G version, we do not need anymore. On the basis of not being able to do so, Huawei Mate30 5G continues the unique “Super Run Eyes” design, which stands out among the flagships with high homogeneity.
Through the multi-day photo experience, we have experienced the advantages of super-sensitive Leica three-shot in daily use: Huawei Mate30 5G has the same super-sensitive outsole main photo with its own “Pro” big brother, and with the increasingly mature handheld night scene and other exclusive algorithms, with its daily photo can save the trouble of carrying a card camera, the overall performance is currently Next to the more customized Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
After looking at the 5G speed measurement and 5G network download files, we also focused on the 5G power optimization of Huawei Mate 30 5G, which we are most concerned about. The conclusion is that Huawei’s Mate30 5G can be said to have improved by leaps and bounds compared to the power consumption of the first generation 5G flagship.
In the evaluation process, the average power consumption of the downloaded files of the original 5G flagship under the 5G network was about 4.5W, and the peak value was close to 6W. The average power consumption of Huawei Mate30 5G under the same conditions is about 2.9W, and the peak value is only 3.5W. According to this development speed, we can boldly guess that at this time next year, the power consumption of Huawei’s 5G mobile phone may be controlled to the current 4G mobile phone level, and once again, it will bring a better experience.
Some of the “magic” is that as the second generation 5G flagship, Huawei Mate30 5G next opponent is still a 5G mobile phone that only supports NSA networking mode, and it is worth mentioning that it is for sale from 4999 yuan. The price is even lower than the iPhone 11 series that does not support 5G functions. This kind of lethality can be imagined.
In addition, the vertical comparison shows that Huawei Mate30 and Huawei Mate 30 5G are the smallest gaps in the core functional experience compared to the “Pro” models in the previous Mate models.
Obviously, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G is still undertaking the mission of exploring the most cutting-edge technologies and embarking on the top-level specifications. Huawei Mate 30 5G is bound to become the best price, top flagship configuration specifications, and unique design language. The first “explosive” in the 5G era, stabilized at the end of 2019 and the main force of the 5G flagship in 2020.
