The long-awaited and waiting for years fingerprint detection technology under the display has finally come to market this year with the vivo X20 Plus UD and X21 UD. These are the first smartphones to offer such a solution, specifically a Synaptics Clear ID sensor. Apparently, even Huawei is following the path of the sensor under the display for its next Huawei Mate 11 (or Huawei Mate 20 – from this year the P series has gone from 10 to 20).
Unlike Vivo, however, Huawei is said to have chosen to use Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor solution. In this case, the new Mate series smartphone could be the first model to be shipped with that particular integrated sensor.
Huawei Mate 11/20 should be launched at the end of the third quarter or at the beginning of the fourth quarter (ie in September or October). Qualcomm has allegedly collaborated with GIS in Taiwan and with the Chinese company O-film Tech, both specialized in the offer of touchscreen solutions, in order to better integrate its ultrasonic sensor.
According to initial reports, the sensor is three times more expensive than traditional counterparts, but the module has a thickness of only 0.44 mm and works through “covering glasses up to 800 microns”, compared to only 200-300 microns of glass thickness for “normal” capacitive scanners.
In addition, the Qualcomm sensor will work even when the fingers are wet or greasy. Huawei is not the only Chinese company looking for fingerprint sensors under the display, with others who apparently have decided to follow this path. Among them, the main one is definitely Xiaomi.
