Chinese drone manufacturer GDU Technology has released a new compact drone. The GDU O2 and the GDU O2 Plus are equipped with a 4K camera and obstacle avoidance sensors. The drones also have a function that we have not yet seen with dredging manufacturer DJI. The latest product from GDU is the GDU O2 and GDU O2 Plus drone. From the optics and the functionality, it is undoubtedly a competition for the DJI Mavic Pro or DJI Mavic Pro Platinum drone.
Design
The new GDU O2 Drone can also be transported to save space and is ideal as a travel drone, but the mechanism is different. With the Mavic Pro, the propeller arms are folded in while the propeller arms of the GDU O2 drone can be extended out of the fuselage. Visually, both models are very similar, yet they also show differences. The GDU O2 version is a slightly stripped down version of the GDU O2 Plus version. At the moment you can only buy the slimmed-down GDU O2 version, however, the GDU O2 Plus version will also be available soon. Visually, the two versions do not differ, but only in the functional scope. The duration of the 4000 mAh battery is 20 minutes. The purchase of replacement batteries worth it to be able to fly longer. The dimensions of the GDU O2 (or GDU O2 Plus) are approx. 185 x 52 x 93 mm. The maximum speed is about 54 km / h. The weight is approx. 700 grams including battery. The GDU O2 drone is one of the very few serious competitors of the DJI Mavic Pro drone, all previous clones cannot be regarded as serious competition. The Walkera Vitus also tried it but probably also got a competitor by the GDU O2. We think the design is great if a bit copy. We are curious how the GDU O2 drone will be accepted by the pilots and whether it will become a true competitor and compete in the highly competitive market.
Camera
Camera and 3-axis gimbal are identical in both the GDU O2 and the GDU O2 Plus drone. Both versions have a modern 3-axis gimbal and a 4K camera mounted. Videos can be shot in ultra-sharp 4K quality and photos shot in a 13-megapixel quality. The 3-axis gimbal compensates for flight, wind, and proper movements, so you get straight and wobbly aerial photographs. Of course, an FPV function is also on board. The live image of the camera is sent in real time to the smartphone of the pilot. This sees what the drone films, so you get a completely new perspective on your own environment. The FPV function allows the pilot to fly the quadrocopter from a cockpit perspective. However, the GDU O2 only has a radio range of approx.
Remote Control
The remote control of the GDU O2 and GDU O2 Plus looks very stylish and is very functional. In the GDU O2 version, the remote control operates on a 5.8 GHz frequency band in the GDU O2 Plus version on a 2.4 GHz frequency. The remote control can be pushed apart so that your own smartphone finds space in the middle. The radio range of the GDU O2 version is 1 kilometer whereas the radio range of the GDU O2 Plus version is almost 7 kilometers. If you push the remote control together and fold the antennas, you can turn off the GDU O2 Plus Drone on the remote control. Both can then, even more, space-saving stowed in the pockets. We think this idea is great because you have both in one place. The battery life of the 1200 mAh battery of the remote control is about 1.5 hours.
Sensors
The GDU O2 and GDU O2 Plus drone have a forward-facing anti-collision system, which is part of the fail-safe features. Cameras, various sensors, and a GPS system work together on the obstacle detection, the quadrocopter recognizes an obstacle and stops in front of it or flies around it. Like various DJI drones, the GDU O2 drone also has a down-facing Vision Positioning System. A downward-facing camera with sensors measures the distance to the ground and helps ensure that the hover function is also guaranteed without GPS reception. The quadrocopter not only has GPS but also GLONASS. The sensors and cameras ensure a safe flight and are part of a sophisticated fail-safe system.
Intelligent Flight Modes
Like the Mavic Pro, the two versions of the GDU O2 drone also have many intelligent flight modes that take a lot of work out of the pilot’s mind and help create breathtaking aerial shots. The pilot has a follow-me mode, a rocket mode (similar to the DJI Spark) and a drone mode available. The pilot can make himself film without having to control the drone at the same time or let an object of interest circulate without having to control himself. The camera has a Slow-Motion and TimeLaps function, which you can use directly and do not have to add in post-processing. Gestures recognize the two versions of the GDU O2 drone also, so you can eg take pictures by the gesture. An intelligent Return To Home function is also integrated.
Conclusion
This GDU O2 Drone is 4K capable, foldable, and compact with never before seen features. Sporting one of the world’s smallest 3-axis stabilized camera gimbals, the GDU 02 Plus is a direct competition to the newly revamped DJI Mavic Pro Platinum.
