According to the Jakarta Times on January 9, Agus Dwi Susanto, president of the Indonesian Association of Pulmonologists, reminded the public that there is a serious misunderstanding of electronic cigarettes among the general public.
A 2021 study found that 17.2% of 937 respondents in Jakarta chose to use e-cigarettes because of their taste, another 3.4% chose to use them because they smoked special effects smoke, and 1.7% chose to use e-cigarettes because they followed the fashion trend.
Agus Devi Susanto pointed out that “many people mistakenly believe that e-cigarettes have lower nicotine content and can be used as a smoking cessation or alternative therapy, which is 76.7% of the population.” He said on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. In addition, a 2019 study of 104 students at the University of Indonesia found that the majority of respondents held a positive view of the definition, composition, pros and cons of e-cigarettes. But Susanto believes that e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes are actually the same, the same harmful substances.
He explained in detail that whether it is traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes, they also contain substances that are addictive, irritating and can cause inflammation.
E-cigarettes also contain nicotine, carcinogens, and other irritating toxic substances, although e-cigarette smoke does not contain carbon monoxide (CO) and TAR. According to Mr. Susanto, e-cigarettes contain some nicotine, which can be addictive, nitrosamines, which can be carcinogenic, and glycerin or glycol, which can cause respiratory and lung irritation.
