DJI, the largest drone manufacturer in the world, presented on Tuesday the Mavic Air model, a new consumer drone that is positioned (both by price and technical characteristics) between the well-known Mavic Pro and the compact Spark. He has plenty of flavors on board that will appeal to filmmakers.
DJI Mavic Air inherits in fact from the series whose name it bears the camcorder in 4K (Spark stops at 1080p), but always at 30 fps, although the bitrate reaches up to 100 Mbps: the maximum for a consumer DJI drone. Regarding the bitrate, it should be noted that DJI Mavic Air also has 8 GB of internal memory, a unique feature that neither Spark nor Mavic Pro can boast. Of course, the expansion remains via microSD, and also comes the USB Type-C, for an easier and faster connection and download of movies.
Then we have the FlightAutonomy 2.0, that is the whole series of sensors that allow a “safe” and obstacle-proof flight. And let’s not forget the most peculiar feature: the folding arms. And how compact it is, you can already understand it from the opening image. Add us then that weighs only 430 grams and you will understand that taking it with you is not difficult at all.
Always from a technical point of view, there is a 3-axis gimbal for stable shooting, and the device integrates a 1/2.3-inch 12MP CMOS sensor with a f/2.8 aperture that can go up to 120 fps in full HD, in case you need to shoot particularly busy scenes. Speaking of shooting, there is no shortage of QuickShot modes (rocket, drone, circle, helix and the new asteroid and boomerang – see GIF below
SmartCapture, which simplify the making of film shoots. Then there are new HDR algorithms, for higher contrast photos, and the new Sphere function, which combines up to 25 photos to create a 32MP panoramic image; and this is just one of many examples of “panorama” that can be captured with DJI Mavic Air.
We also report the new ActiveTrack of Mavic Air, which now recognizes different subjects, follows them and keeps them in the frame. Do not miss even the manual gesture already “appreciated” in Spark, to take off, follow, photograph, record, drive, back and land without the need for any remote control. And regarding the latter, you can push yourself up to 4 km away with video transmission in full HD (only at close range, otherwise in 720p), and in Sport mode, Mavic Air arrives until at 68.4 Km / h, and is compatible with DJI Goggles, for a flight in FPV. Finally, DJI Mavic Air has a maximum flight time of 21 minutes and supports winds up to 36 km / h and altitudes of up to 5,000m above sea level.
DJI Mavic Air will be available in the colors Onyx Black, Arctic White and Flame Red at a price of $799 in the regular version (including the remote) and $999 for the Fly More Combo , which includes the drone, 2 batteries, a remote control device, a travel bag, two pairs of propeller protectors, 6 pairs of propellers, a battery / power bank adapter and a battery charging hub.The drone should already be in pre-order from the official store, and in affiliated physical stores, shipments are scheduled as early as January 28th.
