The new Cayin N3 Pro Player gives its owner the choice. The HR player offers two options for sound tuning. With its timbre selector, it routes the audio signal via a circuit branch with a vacuum tube or transistor (via the 3.5 mm jack output). There is also a dual-tube operating mode: triode and ultra-linear (via the 3.5 mm jack output). This allows everyone to subtly adapt the sound to their listening habits. The sound is fantastic, precise and clear, and hard to beat in this price range.
Design
To minimize filament vibrations, the lamps are housed in a special silicone housing suspended inside the player. Thanks to the flexible cable connecting the lamps to the board, we have achieved maximum damping of vibrations. Thanks to months of testing and development, you can put the player in your pocket or backpack without damaging the lamps. Resonant effect on the lamps can be heard when running, or when tapping on the body of the player.
Display
The main control is a 3.2-inch IPS touch screen with a resolution of 480×360. The picture quality is good, the display is quite bright. On the right side, there are three mechanical buttons for switching tracks and pauses, as well as a volume wheel that is pressed to start and block. Its course is quite easy, so accidental triggering is possible. On the bottom side, there are three outputs: 3.5 linear, 3.5 standard, and 4.4 balanced, as well as a charging connector.
Features
The audiophile hi-res player can also prove itself in outdoor use. Dual Asahi Kasei AK4493 DACs natively decode up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256. After D/A conversion, the signal passes through a fully balanced circuit with 4.4mm and 3.5mm headphone outputs. The powerful balanced headphone output provides up to 800 mW at 32 Ω and thus also drives low-efficiency headphones. The Cayin N3 Pro also provides two lines and two digital outputs and can be operated as a USB DAC on a PC. On top of that, the pocket player enables Hi-Res Bluetooth transmission DAC (LDAC, UAT, AAC). It is operated via a 3.2-inch touch screen with clear menus that is also easy to read from the side. A multicolored LED completes the user feedback.
Reinforcement & Interfaces
The built-in headphone amplifiers are no less fine. With the Cayin N3 Pro, you can switch between an output amplifier equipped with tubes, which can also be used in triode or ultra-linear operation, and an asymmetrically designed semiconductor amplifier. The N3 Pro’s 3.5mm headphone jack gives you the choice of tube or solid-state amplification. On the other hand, only the symmetrical signal of the semiconductor amplifier is available at the 4.4 mm Pentaconn socket.
Verdict
The Cayin N3 Pro is a small UFO in the very closed world of portable audiophiles. Not really sexy but well built, it stands out above all with the carriage of tubes for the amplification part. It offers us no less than four different sound signatures. Everyone can therefore find the shoe that suits them by adapting the listening to the mood and the equipment in place.
