We are pleased to learn of this move. It clearly represents a watershed moment for the e-cigarette category, as the government recognises the key role of e-cigarettes in making smoking obsolete and translates into national action. It also means the UK is back on track to go smoke-free by 2030.
There has been evidence for years that e-cigarettes are at least 95 percent less harmful than smoking, and successive studies have shown that they are the most effective way to quit traditional cigarettes. While smoking kills more than 200 people a day in the UK, no one worldwide has ever died from smoking nicotine liquid.
It is also very positive to see that the government has recognised the need to provide e-cigarette options for smokers. This is key because their frequency of smoking will vary greatly, so a one-size-fits-all approach to quitting via e-cigarettes will not work. There is also a great need to educate smokers about e-cigarettes – research we recently commissioned shows a lack of advice, which is vital to help smokers quit.
This government initiative to encourage adult smokers to quit via e-cigarettes is a big step in the right direction, but to ensure that e-cigarettes are for adults only, it needs to work in tandem with measures already proposed to address the youth e-cigarette situation by the Government and our associations.
