Qualcomm said that in 2023, the baseband supplied to the iPhone will only account for 20% of Apple’s needs. Obviously, this means that 80% of the baseband on the iPhone will come from a new manufacturer. Although Samsung, MediaTek, etc. are theoretically possible, the latest report emphasizes that Apple is actually going to use self-developed products.
According to the media quoted insiders, 2022 will be the last year that Qualcomm will exclusively supply baseband for the iPhone. However, the A17 processor on the “iPhone 15” in 2023 will not integrate the baseband, that is, Apple’s self-developed baseband will still use the plug-in method.
In addition, the 20% baseband chips supplied by Qualcomm will be mainly used in iPhone old stock models and entry-level models (such as SE), and a small amount will be used in regional markets not supported by Apple’s baseband.
In July 2019, Apple spent $1 billion to acquire the core assets of Intel’s baseband business. After that, its baseband research and development speeded up. It is said that TSMC is ready to manufacture this product for Apple.
