Although HomeKit and home App didn’t get much attention in the WWDC24 conference keynote speech, Apple still added some relevant practical new features for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.
Custom Access allows users to manage when and how visitors use HomeKit-equipped smart home devices, such as garage door remotes, security systems, and door locks. Users can create a guest calendar and specify specific devices that visitors can use to limit the amount of time visitors can visit the house. It should be noted that this function requires the use of home central equipment.
Igeekphone noted that for iPhone or Apple Watch users equipped with UWB chips, as well as smart door locks that support UWB, Apple has introduced a “fast mode” that allows users to automatically unlock the device when they are near the door without manual operation.
In addition, Apple will add support for robot cleaners later this year. At that time, the home App will support the core functions of the sweeping robot, such as controlling the switch, cleaning mode, vacuuming, mopping and charging status. Users can also integrate the robot into automated operations and scenes and control it with Siri voice commands.
It is worth mentioning that Apple will also add a power use integration function in the home App, but initially limited to some customers of Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the United States. This feature allows users to view their home electricity usage and electricity package in the home App. Power usage integration is expected to go live later in 2024, and Apple plans to add support for more power providers in the future.
