Today Google launched Android 12 Developer Preview 2 (DP2) first to Pixel phones. Following the release of the DP1.1 patch earlier this month, DP2 provides developers with a number of new features that they can use in their applications.
As with the first release, DP2 is still in the “priority window” for developers to test and submit feedback on the upcoming Android 12 API.
The new features are as follows :(More on this later)
The dark theme on the Pixel has become lighter
One-handed mode is online and appears to be fully usable.
WiFi sharing is now always in light mode.
Gadget list redesigned, lock screen PIN code and mode input adjustment.
Paint in picture revision brings new gestures, deposits.
The media player user interface now uses the system tone.
A new device, the Pixel Launcher search bar, is in development, and there may be others.
The “Game Dashboard” will add features such as quick access recording, YouTube streaming and more.
On the subject of “trust and security,” Android apps can require a device to be unlocked before letting users take action on lock screen notifications. For example, chat apps can require authentication before deleting messages. At the same time, developers can block overrides from appearing in their sensitive applications and workflows (i.e., transactions), and you can display content at the top of the active application.
On the user experience side, applications can request details about the device’s rounded UI. Radius, center points, and other data allow developers to adjust nearby UI elements and prevent them from being truncated.
When exiting a media app that is playing a video, Android 12 DP2 immediately switches to picture-in-picture mode, rather than waiting for the animation to scroll up to the home page to complete. “This makes the transition smoother and improves perceptual performance,” Google said. Pin-in-picture Windows can now also be temporarily hidden/shelved by dragging them to the left/right edge of the screen. A single click displays only the controls rather than expanding them in full, while a double click toggles between the current and maximum PIP size rather than going full screen. Windows can also be resized by pinching and zooming.
Android 12 introduced the CompaniesDeviceservice API, which is designed to improve apps for managing devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers, we have learned. When a wearable makes close contact with your phone, the companion app wakes up.
The system keeps the service bound as long as the device is nearby, and notifies the service when the device enters and leaves range or is turned off, allowing the application to clean up the state as needed.
Other changes in Android 12 DP2 include a more accurate bandwidth estimation API and easier application of graphical effects (blur, color filters, and so on) to views.
There’s an Android Beta Feedback app on the Pixel phone that users can access from the app drawer or through quick Settings to submit bugs in the Google issue tracker.
