The Snapdragon 625, 626, 630 650, 652, 653 and 660 were obviously not enough to cover the mid-range correctly, Qualcomm today announced its new processor for mid-to-high-end devices. It is the new Snapdragon 636, a chip that includes a new Kyro 260 CPU capable of overcoming the performance of the current Snapdragon 630 by 40%. Another interesting detail that includes this new brain is that it will be compatible with ultra widescreen FHD + screens, something which will allow manufacturers to design even more attractive terminals with larger screens and designs very different from those we are used to finding in the mid-range.
Snapdragon™ 636, designed to provide improvements to devise performance, enhanced gaming and display technology support in comparison to the Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platform. The Snapdragon 636 continues to build out the strong portfolio in Qualcomm Technologies’ high-performance tier of Snapdragon mobile platforms serving users who demand high-quality devices with top-level features at a low price point
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 is a chip engraved in 14 nm LPP. The processor is composed of 8 cores Kryo 260 up to 1.8 GHz, like the Snapdragon 660 but at a lower frequency. According to the manufacturer, The inclusion of Kryo 260 cores allows the Snapdragon 636 to deliver 40 percent better performance than the Snapdragon 630 which includes generic ARM Cortex cores.Snapdragon 630 presented only a few months ago.
The Snapdragon 636 officially brings support for full HD 18:9 displays, running at a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels. It also comes with support for Assertive Display technology that optimizes the display visibility to improve readability in all lighting conditions. And since we’re talking about the visual, we can not let the new GPU on the chip go, an Adreno 509 10% faster than the previous generation and will again promise to offer “unprecedented gaming experiences.” This GPU also comes with a Visual Processing Subsystem that integrates the EcoPix and TruPalette technologies to offer the best image quality on the screen.
In terms of connectivity, Snapdragon 636 supports dual-SIM 4G LTE with VoLTE HD voice calling, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, and Snapdragon X12 4G LTE modem, with peak download speeds of up to 600Mbps and 150 Mbps of upload speeds, With the chipset, you also set support for Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec for Hi-Fi audio on the go (up to 192kHz/24bit support). Lastly, Snapdragon 636 also supports Quick Charge 4.0, and USB 3.1 connectivity.
Snapdragon 636 is pin and software-compatible with the existing SD 660 and 630 chipsets. It means that smartphone OEMs that are already using these chipsets can seamlessly add SD 636 to their devices and Qualcomm expects to ship the chipsets to manufacturers by November, and we are likely to see smartphones powered by the chipset in late 2017 or early 2018.
