Since the development of smartphones, the performance of processors, screens, imaging systems, and fast charging has been significantly improved. More and more new technologies have been added to phones. Today’s flagship smartphones are definitely powerful.
But do you feel that the smartphone in 2022 only had a significant improvement in the image, and other performances can only be said to be regular upgrades? So, when the time comes to 2023, in what ways can this phone be improved? Let’s discuss smartphone technology advancements in 2023:
Another breakthrough in the 1-inch camera sensor
In 2022, all major smartphone manufacturers are focusing on smartphone imaging. The most representative may be Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The combination of a one-inch large base and a periscope telephoto can be said to be the benchmark. A larger sensor size means it will accept more light. Furthermore, the same number of pixels spread over a larger surface area translates into larger pixels. On a microscopic level, these pixels capture and thus process more information about the image.
The sensor is now available on the Vivo X90 Pro, X90 Pro Plus, and Xiaomi 13 Pro. The upcoming Oppo Find X6 Pro is also expected to use the same sensor. In 2023, it is believed that more manufacturers will launch phones with 1-inch outsoles and periscope telephoto lenses. Of course, mobile phone images are not just a pile of hardware, software optimization, and adjustment will be more important. This depends on the understanding and achievements of major mobile phone imaging manufacturers.
Xiaomi has started to re-polish the Sony IMX989 with new optics. And some manufacturers make the 1-inch sensor more rigid. The industry chain will be able to ship 2G+6P glass and plastic lenses next year, and there may even be a combination of 1-inch main camera+2G+6P+variable aperture on the new machine. Glass + plastic variable aperture structure 1-inch main camera miniaturization design is not a dream.
For reference, Huawei Mate 50 Pro has significantly improved the ability of the dynamic image optical system after adding a variable aperture. In the automatic mode, it has four smart apertures, which can intelligently match the aperture size according to different scenes. In the professional mode, you can pass The ten-level adjustable physical aperture can adjust the depth of field range and bokeh degree at will.
fast charging technology
Fast charging is a feature in phones that has grown exponentially over the past few years and will continue to do so. Smartphone makers, especially in China, regularly push the boundaries of charging technology and surprise us with innovative ways.
Although 120W fast charging is more than enough, manufacturers are still developing further upgrades. Recently we have ushered in 150W, 165W, and even 210W fast charging. Redmi Note 12 Explorer, has a maximum charging speed of 210W. Its 4,300mAh battery can be fully charged from 0-100% in about 9 minutes.
It is followed by the iQOO 10 Pro, which has a top charging speed of 200W, which is advertised as enough to charge the phone from 0-100% in about 10 minutes.
Of course, we can’t forget to mention OnePlus here either, as the OnePlus 10T supports 160W and comes with a SuperVOOC charger in the box, which we measured went from 0% to 100% in 23 minutes.
Next up is Realme’s 240W fast charging solution launched with the GT Neo5. This Realme 240W flash charge will reach the highest power of the Type-C 3.1 protocol at this stage, which is a major technological breakthrough for mobile phones.
We can clearly see the results of all these efforts in today’s modern mobile phones, some of which can be fully charged in half an hour. Therefore, this also means that people’s charging habits have also changed. For example, the habit of charging your phone all night is slowly but surely disappearing as it is no longer needed.
OPPO MariSilicon Y commercial debut
The MariSilicon Y audio-specific chipset is a new technology that is expected to debut with the OPPO Find X6 series of smartphones in 2023. This chip is OPPO’s second self-developed chip after the successful launch of MariSilicon X, which improves OPPO’s camera quality to a new level. The MariSilicon Y chip is designed to improve audio quality and promises to deliver several new features and capabilities.
One of the key features of the MariSilicon Y chip is its ultra-high-speed Bluetooth solution, whose integration enables a transfer rate that is 400% faster than conventional Bluetooth. In addition, the chip also includes OPPO’s custom-developed URLC lossless encoding with leading performance, which realizes 192KHz/24bit lossless audio wireless transmission for the first time.
This means users will be able to enjoy high-quality, lossless audio wirelessly without any loss of quality. The MariSilicon Y chip is also expected to boost the overall audio performance of the Find X6 series, making it an ideal device for music lovers and audiophiles.
3nm process
It was previously reported that the iPhone 15 will use the A17 chip, and the A17 chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process. Samsung also announced mass production of the 3nm process in the first half of last year.
The advantage of 3nm processors over current 4nm and 5nm processors is that they can deliver better performance, but certainly with greater power efficiency. TSMC said that the 3nm process will reduce power consumption by 25% to 30%, improve performance by 10% to 15%, and increase transistor density by about 70%. It can be seen from TSMC’s 3nm process that it mainly focuses on reducing the power consumption of mobile phones and improving the battery life and performance of mobile phones.
Taiwan expects Apple to become a major customer of 3nm chips. In addition, it was recently reported that Apple will be the first to use TSMC’s 3nm processor. Historically, each generation of Apple’s A-series processors has delivered a 10% to 25% speed increase. With the continuous improvement of TSMC’s 3nm process technology, it is believed that the two chip giants of Android, Qualcomm, and MediaTek will also join the era of using 3nm process technology, and then the chips of mobile phones can usher in another upgrade.
Foldable Smartphone
Folding screen technology is another area that could see progress in 2023. In recent years, we’ve seen foldable smartphones from several manufacturers including Samsung and Huawei. However, these devices face challenges such as durability issues and a lack of optimized application and system adaptation. As manufacturers continue to improve foldable display technology, we may see more durable and flexible folding screens, as well as better system and application integration, making foldable smartphones more practical and user-friendly.
Another area that could see progress in 2023 is the cost of foldable phones. Currently, folding smartphones are relatively expensive, which limits their appeal to mainstream consumers. Manufacturers will likely continue to work on reducing the cost of folding display technology, making it more accessible to a wider range of consumers. This will likely be achieved through economies of scale and advances in production technology, as well as by reducing the cost of materials used to produce foldable screens.
The above are the 5 major technological advancements that will occur in smartphones in 2023. What do you think? Welcome to leave a message in the discussion area below, thank you.
