At an event in London yesterday, smartphone maker Vertu unveiled its latest design, Metavertu, which claims to be the first “Web3 phone” that can run its own blockchain nodes and turn photos and videos into NFT.
Since it is from Vertu, the phone naturally aimed at the high-end market. All versions feature a ceramic body and Vertu’s signature sapphire glass screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU, a 6.67-inch 2400 x 1080 AMOLED display, three rear cameras with three lenses, and a built-in 4,600mah battery that can be fully charged in 20 minutes.
The entry-level model, with a carbon fiber finish, 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, will cost 25,800 yuan. The high-end models, which offer 18GB of RAM and 1TB of storage and use high-end materials such as’ Himalayan crocodile skin ‘, 18-karat gold and diamonds, range in price from 46,800 yuan to 300,800 yuan.
Vertu Chief Executive Gary Chan, speaking at a phone launch event in London, said the problem with Web3 was that its complexity put off new users. “We want to reinvent the smartphone and make Web3 less complicated,” he said.
With this in mind, Metavertu can switch between Web2 mode (the standard Android operating system on most smartphones) and Web3 mode. With just a few clicks, users can create a wallet with a private key protected by the phone’s Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) and access to a set of decentralized applications (DApps) through a friendly Android-style interface.
According to a Vertu spokesperson, these Dapps include VOS, which enables phones to be used as validators, lightweight nodes, and lightweight clients on the Ethereum blockchain. Another app, Vshot, enables users to generate an NFT from a photo or video with the click of a button.
The phone also has built-in Vtalk, an encrypted peer-to-peer messaging app that “integrates decentralised social networking” features.
In addition to this, users will have access to 10 terabytes of distributed storage on IPFS, as well as access to Vertu’s “Red Button” 24/7 concierge service, which has also been updated to reflect the world of Web3. Vertu now has a dedicated NFT investment team to help users better understand NFTS quickly, including guiding newcomers through the process of collecting unforgeable tokens and advising them on which upcoming collectibles are worth snapping up.
