Lawmakers in the European Union (EU), the European Parliament, and the European Council have passed regulations requiring all smartphones sold in this market to be equipped with USB-C ports, including iPhones. Therefore, many recent rumors have revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be the first Apple device to own this new connection port.
Specifically, the source LeaksApplePro said that the USB-C port will be equipped on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max next year. Meanwhile, cheaper iPhone lines like iPhone 15 and 15 Max still retain the old lightning port.
Also according to LeaksApplePro, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Max will switch to USB-C in 2024, while the iPhone 16 Pro version may use wireless charging technology. Agreeing with this view, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also confirmed that the entire iPhone 15 series in 2023 will abandon the Lightning connection and use USB-C.
Ming-chi Kuo thinks that the USB-C port is not as water-resistant as lightning and will affect Apple’s MFi certification. Therefore, the EU’s latest standardization of charging ports has had a significant impact on this technology group.
In addition, removing the lightning port and replacing it with USB-C will significantly affect the design of Apple’s devices.
According to a Bloomberg report last month, Apple is already testing iPhones and USB-C adapters for its products. From all this information, it seems that the company has really accepted its fate and is going to retire its Lightning cables for good.
