During a keynote presentation at its annual World Developers Conference, Apple unveiled the first details of the next major software update for the Apple Watch: watchOS 9.
Updated Watch Faces and Modes of WatchOS 9
The Apple Watch experience starts right from the dial, which can be customized to best express your personal style without ever losing sight of important information thanks to complications. watchOS 9 introduces the new Lunar, Recreation, Metropolitan and Astronomy watch faces. watchOS 9 introduces improved and even more modern complications for the more classic watch faces, such as Functional, Simple, and Analog Activity, as well as the ability to change the background color of Modular, Compact Modular, and Extra large.
The Workout app, one of the most used on the Apple Watch, has been updated and now offers even more detailed metrics to measure performance, and new workout experiences to help you reach your fitness goals. Now, by turning the Digital Crown when in a session screen, you can switch between views to see important metrics for various types of workouts.
The heart rate zones, which can be created manually or automatically calculated using the personalized data from the Health app, allow you to monitor the intensity of your workouts. watchOS 9 offers more data and features that help monitor the efficiency of your workouts. New running parameters include stride length, ground contact time, and vertical swing, and can be added as metrics in training views.
Thanks to built-in sensors, Apple Watch can now automatically detect tablet workouts in the pool and identify the type of stroke and distance traveled in the final summary. It is also possible to monitor the efficiency of each swim thanks to the SWOLF score, which sums up the time and number of strokes required to complete a lap, and the relative average for each set can be checked in the training summary.
Thanks to the sleep phase analysis, watchOS 9 now provides even more information: using the signals received from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can detect when the user is in light, REM, or deep sleep. Machine learning models were trained and validated against polysomnography standards involving one of the largest and most diverse study groups ever employed for a wearable device.
The new Medicines app on Apple Watch and iPhone helps manage and track your medication, vitamin, and supplement intake by allowing you to create lists, set schedules, and reminders, and view medication information in the Health app. The Medicines app on Apple Watch helps the user to easily and discreetly monitor their medication intake, anytime, anywhere.
Privacy is key in the design and development of all Apple features. When the user’s iPhone is locked with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, the information in Health remains encrypted, except that of the medical record. The same goes for data included in iCloud backups, which remain undecipherable both in transit and within Apple’s servers.
