Earlier this year, it was revealed that Apple was ditching its existing off-screen fingerprint scheme to focus on off-screen Face ID. The news sparked a heated debate among users about when to say goodbye to bangs and perforated screens.
Apple has granted and published a patent for an off-screen Face ID.
According to the patent, the technology removes the bangs by placing the original front-facing lens and deep sense camera system behind the display.
As you can see from the diagram, this patent is not fundamentally different from the current under-screen camera technology, which means that the technology is more mature, but it also means that Apple needs to face the imaging problems of the current under-screen camera technology.
Apple plans to introduce Face ID on the 2024 iPhone 16 series, according to news released earlier this month by Skywind International analyst Guo Mingqi.

And, says Guo Mingqi, the 2024 launch of off-screen Face ID is more of a marketing goal than a technical one, perhaps a sign that the technology has come a long way.
