According to MacRumors, Skywind International analyst Guo MingQi tweeted today that Apple plans to release AirPods Pro 2 wireless in the second half of 2022.
While AirPods 2 are still available for purchasing since Apple released AirPods 3 last year, Apple may discontinue the original AirPods P when it releases a new AirPods Pro later this year, says Guo MingQi. It’s been nearly two and a half years since Apple announced the AirPods Pro generation on October 30, 2019.
Demand for AirPods 3 is “significantly weaker” than AirPods 2, causing Apple to drop at least 30% of AirPods 3 units from suppliers in the second and third quarters of this year, Guo MingQi said.
The AirPods Pro 2 will feature a “significant wireless upgrade” over the original AirPods Pro’s H1, according to Guo MingQi. The chip supports audio-related features such as active noise reduction, an improvement that could improve battery life and enable longer music sessions per charge. Guo MingQi also predicts that the new AirPods Pro will support Apple Music lossless.
The new AirPods Pro charging case will have a sound to help users find the wrong place, Guo MingQi previously claimed the case will likely also be waterproof, like the AirPods 3 case.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Debby Wu previously reported that Apple has been testing a more compact design for the new AirPods Pro that will remove the handle under the earbuds. If this becomes the final design, the new AirPods Pro 2 could look similar to the Beats Studio Buds apple released last year.

Gurman and Wu also claim that the new AirPods Pro 2 will be equipped with motion sensors to provide fitness tracking alongside the Apple Watch.
