One of the biggest disaster in the tech market for the 2016 was undoubtedly the Samsung Galaxy Note7 disaster. The released phablet was exploding easily, causing many problems to its owners, so Samsung had to do a global recall to it, loosing by this way many millions of dollars. However, the Galaxy Note7 is not the first or the last phone to catch fire, as we have heard similar problems and with other mobiles. Only recently a user reported on Reddit that their Galaxy S6 edge+ caught on fire.
According to Beijing Morning Post, a Redmi Note 3 smartphone, bought by a consumer on March 2016, spontaneously combusted while charging on Dec. 21. A Xiaomi official promised to refund and compensate the consumer on the condition of her signing a confidentiality agreement, prohibiting her from commenting publicly on the event.
The Redmi Note 3 was bought on March 1, but on December 21 the device inexplicably started overheating while charging, started to discharge smoke and burned up although the charger was immediately removed. The phone is said to have been charged via the original phone charger. The combustion burned the SIM card and the bed sheets of the owner.
The owner of the Redmi phone contacted Xiaomi and managed to get a full refund plus 600 RMB($86) as compensation. The strange thing is that according to the report, Xiaomi had the owner sign a confidentiality agreement, for not revealing the incident to the media, in order to receive the compensation.
“The agreement prohibited me from commenting on the event to any media outlets, or on public networks or communication platforms. It was like hush money,” said the owner of the Redmi Note, who agreed to sign the agreement in the end.
But after a little a while, a Beijing-based lawyer, Zhang Xinnian, argued that the confidentiality clause in the agreement was invalid. The merchant’s intention to cover up the complaint goes against relevant provisions of contract law. Therefore, the confidentiality clause is invalid, while the indemnity clause is still legitimate.
It’s really very strange for Xiaomi to try and cover up such an important matter. For sure is not the first time, as at least here at igeekphone we have mentioned once before for a Xiaomi combustion before. Of course it is wise to take under great care this news, despite the fact that we have a photo of the combustive mobile.
The most important are the steps that we must take when we are charging our mobile. The phone must not be placed over heated objects, nor near near to water. You must not leave the device plugged in all night or on the mattress. Also it is good to remove the case while charging, as it gets less hot by this way.
